Instead of consistently animating everything into one mediocre mess, the animators think it's more important that the important scenes get good animation and less important stuff can get by on framing. SM's character designs were simplified with more animation in mind though so it has more good animation than XY.

So basically, the rest of the episode looks like shit while a few instances like the one you posted look good?

But in XY, the whole episode would look good. I couldn't give 2 shits about the background characters and their unnecessary expressions during Ash's battles. And even when they did show them, they'd still look good and on model.

That's the thing you SMfags don't seem to understand. No one cares about the other characters and how "fluid" their facial expressions are when all they are doing is reacting to what we care about, which are the battles. XY didn't sacrifice one for the other. Which is why all instances of the battle or episode looked good as opposed to a few so your useless background characters could look "expressive".

And even still. This episode's battle looked worse than your average XY battle, which isn't saying much since every SM battle has suffered from this.

Look at Sharpedo. It has no shading to it at all. I bet you wouldn't have noticed until I told you that it's jaw doesn't stop at the water. Pikachu also has a stupid lifeless look to it. Ash has a bare chest, even though he's always been drawn even as far back as OS, with pecs. Everything is too simplified.

The lineart is more simple to allow for more regular animation. S&M has more movement than previous series, which, like most anime with detailed lineart (read: most anime), is almost entirely made up of stills broken up, maybe once or twice an episode, by "properly" animated action sequences.

Everyone who thinks the simplified character models are evidence of laziness are total rubes who know nothing about animation. The character designs just signify a difference in priorities -- S&M is more interested in movement (and expressive movement) than in detailed lineart or strict adherence to character models.

This is literally how almost all anime is animated, including XY and every other Pokémon series. Most anime is nothing but stills (maybe with a bit of simple animation here or there -- an arm moving, a head turning) punctuated by very brief moments of flashy action. S&M is slightly different, because the simplified character designs allow for more frequent motion.

It was far worse in XY, where ridiculous, exaggerated camera movements made much of the action practically unwatchable. Honestly, watch any battle battle in XY: the camera isn't still for a second, and it's mostly rotating wildly around even the most banal poses and actions.

I just checked the episode and the only segments with good animation was the one in OP and the grass z move. The majority of the battle was, unsurprisingly, animated with shit tier animation. SM strikes again!

Christ no. Watching the episode right now, everything looks like shit so far. XY at least had good animation during the whole battle or at the worst decent, the climax of the battle specially during the league would be god tier animation (see vs M-Sceptle and vs M-Charizard). A battle vs a Kahuna is just as important yet most of it looks like shit.
