but the way I see eeveelution history is in 2 categories:
1. the basic premise: pet-like creature gains colorful elemental powers
2. the "extras": evolves under special condition when some kind of bond deepens far enough

1-1: Let's make it evolve into some basic colorful RPG elements
>Water
>Electric
>Fire

1-2: Let's add the leftover types that are also obvious colorful elements:
>Grass
>Ice

2-1: show off day/night feature + friendship evolution:
>Psychic
>Dark

2-2: show off new type + affection evolution:
>Fairy

Group #1 is pretty much covered. One could argue for Ground in the sense of an Earth-element, but that's about it...

Group #2 feels like it already overdid it by using a second bonding mechanic, and also feels like a "cherry on top"-case, which means that besides some new fancy type being added (let's not forget it took more than a decade to get a new type at all again) the chances of this being expanded are 0.

And that combined leaves the "Eevee must get evolutions for all types, because." as the only reason for any new eeveelutions to be added...so you might have a point there.

Well there ought to be a counter to Sylveon, so a Poison eon or Steel eon would be logically next.

Perhaps a Eon that is the absolute opposite of Sylveon that evolves with minimum happiness.

Poison could work with that, but so could Steel in a metaphorical sense "Heart turned to Steel."

A Ghost Eon would be something to further the Dark/Psychic duo, but I don't know how that would really work as per implementation, unless you add it in with a Fighting Eon.

A Dragon Eon would probably be introduced with the Poison or Steel counterpart to Sylveon.

A Normal Eon would most likely have Protean as an ability and be introduced last.

The groupings suggest that an introduction of an Eevee series (barring Sylveon) brings up a member that is either weak or strong to the other. The Alpha/Beta if you will.

Thus we have a nice little call back to gen 1's issue
