After I missed the deadline for last competition, I was hoping for another cool gimmick comp where everyone has pretty much equal access to everything, barring a few slightly-more-difficult-to-obtain gen5 mons.

About that, I only really got into competitive with current-year VGC, and I know Smogon is severly gimped due to it's rules. My guess is that the Battle Spot Singles ladder (on the PGL) would be pretty representative for this meta. If not, where do I find inspiration on what to use?

Actually, for some reason (well, let's be real, they just didn't want the West to have Japan stuff) they made it so you cannot trade event mons with a ribbon, at all, so the only tradeable ones are injected and easily detectable. In gen 6 that restriction was only in place for the GTS and Wonder Trade, in gen 7 it's there for every online interaction.

Regarding the Marshadow problem:

Timid mega Gengar with 116 def, 176 SpA and 216 speed may be able to counter Marshadow without life orb or choice band.

This allows him to outspeed Jolly Marshadow and tank 1 technician shadow sneak from Adamant and OHKO it with a Shadow Ball.
