I never understood why they made all legendaries genderless.
But Mewtwo is a genetic clone, I can at least understand this one

They're gender is unknown. Genderless is a total misnomer, especially since SM calls Solgaleo/Lunala a male/female despite them not having the gender symbol.

The whole 'Genderless' thing is a result of localization; the actual term used in the original japanese is something akin to 'Gender unknown'. This, combined with the fact that all legendaries are placed in the 'Unknown' egg-group, is a game mechanic to prevent players from breeding entire armies of the things - it doesn't mean that they literally don't have a gender, and there are several instances in the games that suggest otherwise. Off the top of my head: Mew in the first games is female, as it gives live birth to its clone, Mewtwo (and given how cloning works, Mewtwo may originally have been female in-game, before the movie suggested otherwise); The Eon Duo are explicitly labelled as male and female, and Cresselia is also explicitly labeled female; Manaphy can be implied to be female, since it lays unique eggs that hatch Phione; finally, both Solgaleo and Lunala are stated to be male and female evolutions of Cosmog respectively. From a lore standpoint, most of these pokemon have rarely been encountered by humans, so it makes sense that people wouldn't really know what their genders were versus the more common varieties of pokemon.
