1 year anniversary of Alolan Pokemon Announcement

i thought it'd be cool

then i started dreaming about which pokemon could get an alola form

then fake alola mons on the internet were so cool

then Game freak put a stop to every hope

As always, unique and innovative idea stunted by Game Freak's almost obnoxious restrictive behaviors. Will most likely never be expanded upon in future games and abandoned like megas for even newer concepts that in turn, ultimately get abandoned as well

The fanbase had already created the concept of subspecies variants before GF copied the idea with a regional theme.

I welcome it because it enriches the Pokémom world and encourages collectionism

Cool concept, poor execution.
Hoping USUM does them better but there's likely to be very few new Alola Forms considering we've went this long without news in general.

Normally I'd agree with you, but the fact that "regional variant" is an official term implies that Alola isn't the only region that has them. Also, we don't know for sure if Megas have been abandoned, it's possible they just wanted their new gimmick forms to have the spotlight in SM. If USUM don't have new Megas then we can start to worry.

Don't forget aside from Rattata, Diglett and Grimer, most of them are tucked away in the last two islands, so by then you'll already have a Full Team and can't make room for anything like Ninetales, Sandslash or Exeggutor.

I loved them, they along with Golisopod and Marshadow carried Gen 7 for me. Ignoring Raticate and Golem they were easily the best designs in SM. I hope USUM gives us Alolan forms for Dragonite, Lapras, and Mr. Mime.

there's 10 lines with variants. rattata, meowth, grimer, pichu and diglett are on the first island. cubone you can get on the second. geodude, vulpix, sandshrew on the third, exeggcute on the last. they did a lot of things wrong with the forms, but no need to make up bullshit reasons.

Know Your Alola Forms

Buff
- Alolan Ninetales: it is UU while Regular is PU.
- Alolan Muk: it is UU while Regular is NU.
- Alolan Marowak: it is OU while Regular is PU.
- Alolan Sandslash: it is NU while Regular is PU.

Fail
- Alolan Raticate: its decent Speed was min-maxed for its already bad bulk.
- Alolan Raichu: the added Psychic-type gave it more disadvantages than advantages. Also having a single ability and being completely situational is not always the best combination.
- Alolan Persian: its already bad bulk was min-maxed to rise its Sp. Attack a little and that's all folks!
- Alolan Golem: the replace of its Ground-type for the Electric-type was a good thing, but it does nothing with those stats.
- Alolan Exeggutor: its decent bulk was min-maxed to rise its Attack a little, but why if its Sp. Attack it's still higher?

Honorable Mentions
- Alolan Dugtrio: an Alolan form that in hindsight wasn't needed. Sand Trap, the ability that makes Dugtrio usable, was replaced with a clone of Numerugon's Gooey (fuck slugfucker), was given an unneeded Steel-type, and while Dugtrio received +20 points on its Attack, Alolan Dugtrio received +20 points on its Defense. Also it is PU while Regular went from RU to OU.

I love some of the designs a lot - most notably Rattata, Raticate, Sandshrew, Sandslash and Persian - but keeping it to Kanto was a mistake.

Alolan Persian, Golem, and Exeggutor are all buffs to what the originals were.
The reason Alolan Raichu is a downgrade is lack of Lightningrod more than anything else.

Let me explain more the buffs:

- Alolan Ninetales: its already bad Attack was min-maxed in favor of more Speed, Flash Fire and Drought were replaced with Snow Cloak and Snow Warning, and the introduction of Aurora Veil helped it a lot.
- Alolan Muk: Poison Touch and the added Dark-type made it to have the niche of removing items while poisoning the target, that's it. No buff to stats, only replacement of ability and new type.
- Alolan Marowak: at the beginning it was used to check all the Ultra Beasts but now with Rock Head and an actual STAB that makes good use of Rock Head + Thick Club it hits like a truck, but you often wish it had more Speed.
- Alolan Sandslash: ...Steel-type + Slush Rush?

I like all of them except Meowth and Rattata, mostly because the types Dark hits for SE damage are so rare in-game that they feel similar to Normal types. I wish they had been given more out-there typings.

I really like the idea. It's as close to new Pokémon as can get without GF release more new Pokémon species. I hope USUM has more new forms for us, especially on the same tier as A Ninetales and A Marrowak

I was on board with the idea and still am, but the execution has been weird. The number of Alolan Formes is actually weirdly low, and the choices don't make a lot of sense.

Why bother to make another Raticate that's also just an 'eh' UU filler? A-Golem is totally forgettable. And this is a bit of the 'tism, but why's there still not an Arbok 'forme(s)' with different stomach patterns? Seems like a very obvious miss.
