Theta Emerald Ex is Emerald with everything up to gen 6 in it. Really high quality too. Prism is also good, longer game with less content packed into it

The quality is really mixed throughout both of these but they were collabs and people were supposed to redo the worst ones (the ones with yellow or red backgrounds) and touch up the green ones. The project fell apart before they did though.

these are kind of weak, mostly because they look too much like the official artwork of gen 7 just made into a sprite, when they should've actually made them more silly looking to match the gen 2 art style, or at least give them better poses like lurantis and bewear are

Depends on how old school you mean. Pokemon Rejuvenation, which I've been thinking about playing myself, has all 802 mons and updated mechanics, etc. It uses the DS/Gen 4 engine.

Shofu's doing a run of it, which was how I found out about it. Jump to 46 mins in to see that you have access to all 21 starters for your choice (including chance of HA) and maybe a non-traditional starter as a rarity.

HGSS is relegated to Gen 1 and Gen 2 mons excluding evolutions, and covers far, far fewer Legendaries. Anyway, I had already watched what transpired in the first 46 minutes, and there are puzzles and such to occupy the player's time. Besides, don't forget this is a hack -- you can speed through anything you'd like to trim time down to nothing, but it's better for initial runs to pay attention the first time.

It's that kind of talk that plops Mewtwo in a cave in XY with nothing else to do there. If the game is just grind, catch, grind it becomes stale. I didn't even mind the cutscenes in Sun/Moon, I feel like the banter on this board about it is so exaggerated -- if anything, they should've had a skip option for re-runs of the game but the first time isn't a big deal unless you really can't be asked to focus.

It doesn't matter how long the game is, I don't want to sit through 46 minutes of cutscenes before I get to my first battle, and if 46 minutes of cutscenes before the first battle is the norm I can't imagine the rest of the game is any good. "45 hours min." is probably filled with tons of padding if the game starts off that way.

It's not all cutscenes -- you actually maneuver the character through the game at several points, you just don't have a Pokemon yet because it's not a blind journey, it's setup for a quest.
