Arms folded Tentacruel is so awesome. I also really like Sandshrew for some reason. Mewtwo looks great in RB as well, and both Nidoking an Nidoqueen look good. Then you have Exeggcute's giant egg and Kingler has two giant claws. Such a strange mixed bag.

People fail to see that for some reason. Models went for more natural appearances anyway, as opposed to sprites that just wanted to look appealing/cool since they were just images (or animated afterwards in later generations).

RG and RB sprites are so awful it's amusing, even then, Yellow picks up some slack. RSE sprites are just plain bad with no charm to it and probably the least appealing overall, FRLG is somewhat better. Gen V's new sprites are passable with the tweening kind of working out with the simpler shading on the Unova originals, but anything reworked from a Gen IV sprite is garbage.

The quality of sprites really is all over the place. You've got real amateurish stuff like Venomoth and Machop but also fantastic ones like Nidoking and Hitmonlee.

I notice that it's often the base forms that look the worst; does anyone have any idea why it is like that?

Blastoise, Pidgey line, Rattata line, Clefable, Arcanine, Abra and Kadabra, Golden line, Mr. Mime, Scyther, Aerodactyl and Mewtwo all look good to excellent.
