The third version of XY was supposed to come out after ORAS but GF was forced to work on the next games because they were afraid of going back to France due to the increasing frequency of terrorist attacks. Things like Volcanion's dex entry, "the Battle Frontier project has started", and Zygarde's unused moves and relevance to the XY anime shows they had already planned out some general gameplay ideas but couldn't get the references they needed for the new areas as the y feared for their lives. Of course this explains why it was such a rushed generation, they wanted to get things done before someone blew them up. It was a stroke of luck that the next region, Hawaii/Alola was so peaceful because the pattern for each next region is popularity with Japan. There are no terrorism threats to Hawaii, so they could finally implement their ideas, but they had to figure out how to piece them together, and that's why Zygarde is part of Alolan lore now.

It doesn't fit because they're wrong and I know exactly why somewhat in the theme of this thread.

It's more like S/M were intended to be on the Switch sometime this year and, because of a combined fear of utter failure for having to replace the Wii U so quickly and people complaining about it being 2 years since the last one already, Nintendo pushed them to make it 3DS instead.

This makes it rushed and shit because they suddenly had to back port it to a shit system in comparison. That's why they were talking about it in 2015 andwhy it was taking longer than a year to push out the next one.

Though, I wouldn't even say it can't be proven like the OP suggests is what we should be posting per se because there are hints of it. For example, lack of touch screen features could be because they were planning for Gen 8 to be there and thus reducing the functionality so removal wouldn't be so sudden, but when you look at what it actually is most of the time it becomes a little clearer...

The Dex, which inhabits the lower screen most of the time, has always been based on the system. There is no wide, one screen tablet like the Rotomdex in the 3DS family but that's EXACTLY what a Switch is, now isn't it? The character even holds it similar to how you'd hold the Switch with Joycon in official art.

Furthermore, it makes the Dpad functionality make sense too. Just look at how BotW uses it and then how S/M use it. Seems pretty clear it was originally planned to be on the separated Dpad the Joycon has to me.

Emolga was originally the evolution for Pachurisu.

Early on they decided they weren't gonna do crossgen evolutions for BW, but by that time they already had Emolga, so they redesigned it somewhat and put it in. I would say the same thing for Alomomola, but it looks pretty different from Luvdisc to me. Then again, it is at least a LITTLE conspicuous that we have two heart-shaped fish.

On the other hand I think Bouffalant was always meant to be a relative of Tauros's, but not an evolution. They and Miltank all have the same BST, so it seems like the intention was to have them unofficially related.

The twin-tailed girl from early art of Latios & Latios (and the Latias/Blaziken hybrid) is a prototype Zinnia, who was originally going to figure into Gen III's story before being scrapped and later revived for ORAS. The character's riding of Latios/Latias was the inspiration for the Soaring mechanic, and at an early stage of ORAS's development it would've been Zinnia that introduced the mechanic, Latios/Latias and gave the player the Eon Flute instead of Steven.

Don't forget AZ's Floette, Volcanion's event mentioning Southern Kalos too much, and the fact that there are literally two fucking unused games for Gen VI that are registered to be compatible with Bank that happen to exist after ORAS but before SM.

I wouldn't be surprised if we find scrapped concept art for two distinctly powerful Zygarde forms that were meant to be mascots.

Latios and Latias were originally designed as an evolution for Togetic, but were retconned into their own special legendary duo for Gen 3.

They share the same triangle markings, and Togetic has the same white colouration as Lati@s does.

I think it's more likely that once the prototype was split into Latios and Blaziken, they realized that Latios and proto-Togekiss looked so damn similar that they would be redundant. So they averaged the two's designs and turned them into a duo.

Latios and Latias were originally intended to be the cover legendaries. At some point they realized that Team Aqua and Team Magma needed an ultimate goal, so they drew up Groudon and Kyogre.
