Kanto still has the best wild battle, trainer battle, gym leader battle and second best champion battle themes after all this time, although it lacks in route and town themes. XY is worse off than FRLG music wise because Itchy Nose wasn't around.

I like most of XY's overworld and event music, and while most of the battle themes suck which hurt it a lot since you'll be hearing them the most, VS Xerneas/Yveltal and the VS Gym Leader are some of the best in the series.

FRLG has a problem of not using proper instruments. Everything has this tacky soundfont that tries to emulate the original 8 bit sound but falls flat.

There are some exceptions like the champion battle that are pretty good, but most of the route and city music give off bad vibes.

On an unrelated note, the MMBN series were some of the games that really utilized the GBA's soundchip to it's fullest potential.

Most of DPPt's music is very bland. There's nothing really offensive (most games are similar) but very, very few things stand out or stick in my mind.

It's almost a direct contrast to Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky where everything is memorable, catchy, and never leaves my goddamn mind.

the only particularly great tracks are the Trial theme and Battle! Kahuna, though Battle! Gladion and Battle! Elite Four are notable for ripping off PMD and Fire Emblem respectively

I feel like frlg was a hit and miss, but mostly a miss. Same way how hgss slowed every theme down. It doesn't fit in themes like route 29, golenrod or pallet town but new bark feels better

I will never understand the hatred for Unova's soundtrack. You can say a lot of things about gen 5 dissing the soundtrack is a great example of bad taste, it has the most intense and diverse soundtrack out of any other mainline games. Only Johto is able to beat it mainly because no other region can stack up to Johto when it comes to making comfy, melodic, and saccharine songs that get stuck in your head.
