Alola has a similar problem; aside from his current team, there's nothing left that suits him besides Alolan Sandshrew (which is likely anyway if only because it's a type he's never owned before and it matches Lillie's Vulpix) and Hakamo-o, but at least there's no repeating types among those

Alolan Sandshrew is perfect for him

Makes a great first Steel type for him, gives him something other than Pikachu he can use Steelium-Z with when he gets it (since it was foreshadowed a while back), and makes a cute pair with Lillie's Alolan Vulpix

Absolutely not.

Pikachu was at its absolute best in XY, there is no debate. He was literally kicking everyone's ass but didn't take up all the spotlight. And even when it took an occasional dive, it got back up and kicked even more ass. Megas, Pseudos, Legendaries, it didn't matter, Pikachu was out for blood in XY and was the most entertaining to watch in years.

Then we have the Bravest Bird who was taking no prisoners, and only ever jobbed to make the rest of the team look good. Motherfucker went up against a Talonflame as a Fletchling, kicked its ass, and went head on against a Moltres, giving no fucks.

And how could we forget the Forest Champion, Hawlucha? Literally destroying anything thrown against it with style Oh poor Zapdos is mad because we are on its mountains? Well fuck you, Hawlucha came right in and Hi Jump Kicked it to the fucking stars. Mega Absol feeling a little overconfident because it won a little battle in a non canon movie? Flying Press motherfucker.

Don't even get me started on Noivern, who literally came out the womb choking motherfuckers and fighting for its loved ones. Zapdos took out the birdbros? Boomburst Bitch.

Goodra was a jobber near the end but that's only because Ash didn't want to be too OP. This fucking slug was shooting like a fucking canon from the very beginning. If Ash had trained it instead of using it after not having battled with it since the 5th gym, it would of destroyed the entire Pokemon League stadium. Facts.

And then finally, the legend himself. Barbaracle? Gogoat? Bisharp? Luxray? Mega Abomasnow? Mega Gardevoir? Mega Sceptile? GET FUCKED. And if Ash wasn't tired from fighting all fucking day, Alain and Charizard would have gotten their shits kicked in to even before Greninja perfected its form. That whole shit at the Pokemon League? That was nothing. Just the writers cockblocking as usual, but they couldn't stop Greninja from absolutely anything and everything in it's path.

XY was the best team

"Worst" is a bit hard to pin down because, like lots of other anons are saying, it is the team that got him the farthest. A lot of that is due to Ash having a super special Greninja that the writers used as a wild card-- it can KO a Mega Altaria with Water Shuriken no problem, but it gets fucked by Burrasto Burn because, well, that's what the writers wanted. Indeed, the anime pulls a bunch of bullshit when it comes to fights, and ignores a lot of basic mechanics.

Then there's this chart, which is outdated for Gen 6 Pokemon-- Goodra sure as shit isn't sitting at 100% any longer-- but still shows a lot of reliable information for the rest of his Pokemon.

On paper and in a purely competitive sense, Kalos is the weakest. There's a glaring weakness to Ice and Electric that would be super easy to exploit. If we look at his Pokemon through each region, and look at the best possible teams he could have in a somewhat objective sense. I'm going to ignore Pikachu because he's a constant that all teams share.

Kanto: Charizard, Kingler, Snorlax, Bulbasaur, Muk. Lots of evolved Pokemon, fairly well rounded. Poison redundancy with Bulbasaur and Muk, but still, pretty damn good.
Johto: Noctowl, Quilava, Bayleef, Heracross, Donphan. At those percentages, I'd probably swap Bayleef for Totodile. Of note, Cyndaquil and Phanpy didn't evolve during the Johto arc, and I kind of don't know how to count them.
Hoenn: Corphish, Swellow, Glalie, Sceptile, Torkoal. Middling to low, with a notable Rock weakness. Torkoal brings down the average pretty significantly, and Corphish just can’t carry the team. Hoenn saw the least amount of new captures, though, so there aren’t that many options.
Sinnoh: Infernape, Gible, Gliscor, Staraptor, Buizel. It might be worthwhile to swap Torterra in for either Gible or Gliscor. Depends if you put more stock into win percentage or BST. Either way, two Pokemon with x4 Ice weaknesses. Still, some pretty strong contenders here. A lot of final evolutions.
Unova: Krookodile, Scraggy, Pignite, Leavanny, 33%er. Tranquil makes the most sense, probably, to cover the Fighting weakness. Not a terribly well-rounded team, though. Notable Fighting and Flying weakness, with two Dark types and two Fighting+Leavanny. While there’s a deep Unova pool to pull from with nine catches, Ash’s rotating means not all of his best picks got the training and attention they needed.
Kalos: Goodra, Greninja, Talonflame, Hawlucha, Goodra, Noivern. A lot of final evolutions, but there are three Flying types and two Dragons here. It’s complete Ice Beam and Stealth Rocks bait. Ash-Greninja is super strong, though, but I'm not sure how well he can carry.

Not counting Pikachu, Greninja is the only noteworthy member of that team. Hawlucha is alright, but not that great, and Goodra is shit. Talonflame gets wanked way too much for hitting a wild Moltres with Brave Bird, even though it didn't appear to deal significant damage, and Noivern, while admittingly showing impressive speed in outmaneuvering Zapdos, lost every other battle it was in.
