Ignoring how it nerfed dragon (a necessary change), it also unnecessarily nerfed a bunch of other types, the only type that benefitted from it that actually needed some love was poison, while poor bug and ice were shafted even harder than they were before

that's more of a con than a pro considering how EVs and IVs should have been invisible
to give th trainer a training feel of it. the vague IV and Ev indicators of the prev gens
were nice, but outight prioviding the end calculations is a bit robotic for creatures.
that said yes gamefreak might have acknowledged that people were already
calculating IVs on their own in online calculators and they included the Iv monitor to be
able to give conveniece to the players, it's just a bit sad that they did not follow through
with actually making the EV/IVs of all mons to be 'natural'

They started it though. If they made EVs and IVs completely absent from the user side(except maybe saying "this pokemon has good attack") and non manipulable with legal means and didn't make stuff like facilities that required their exploit then they would have been able to preserve them as "natural". To be honest, it almost felt like XY had NO legendaries at all. Xerneas/Yveltal got forced into the climax for no reason, making their encounter extremely anti-climatic. Zygarde does nothing and was shit in battle. And then there was the Kanto Birds and Mewtwo which just acted as poor filler to make the post-game feel less empty and pander to the genwunners.

Per game, all you got was 2 new legends, one of which you would never use, and 2 old legends, both of which you would never use.

I guess the level curve and region size? But thats about it, the story and mythos behind Kalos put me to sleep, and for Pokemon that takes some serious effort. If οnly SM was the same, Alola and lore couple with XYs length would have been amazing.

They weren't forced, Lysandre already had them and were hinted to power the weapon before, it makes the cover legend less annoying during the rest of the plot and more focused on the actual characters. Cover legend based plots are tiresome at this point, I liked that SM at least made it a character you meet throgout the game. Not the best thing ever but at least a nice change of pace.

I partially agree Zygarde could have had a bigger role and was probably planned given its other forms. But again I'd rather have not everything be about cover legends.

The three eventmons did feel like filler though, considering they were just given to you without any integration into the games. We never knew what Diance had to do with Carbink and we had to headcanon Hoopa´s role in ORAS. And Volcanion doesn't even have that.

PSS, Trainer Customization, made Breeding way less of a hassle, gave you a way to see EV spreads on your pokemon, buffing Steel and Poison and nerfing Dragon with Fairy, Wonder Trade, Inverse Battles, Pokemon Amie being interaction similar to that of Walking Pokemon from HGSS, Dex variety, Overworld music, Restaurants being the best place to grind money and EXP, actually challenging without EXP Share so both inexperienced kids and veterans can enjoy, Freeze-Dry, Sticky Web, Parting Shot, Phantom Force, Boomburst, Nuzzle, and Power-Up Punch.

That's not even including more subjective stuff like overall pokemon and mega evolution design, but at the same time, you can't seriously hate every single pokemon design and mega evolution introduced in this generation. Lack of new pokemon isn't entirely valid, either, since Gen 4 basically did the same thing except with regular evolutions and baby forms instead of megas. Remove those and you lose 29 pokemon, left with only 77.

They lit my love for pokemon back on.
I hadn't played any pokemon game or involved myself with any of its content or relevant media since pokemon gold way back,
but when i got gifted my 3ds with Y and booted it up, i was in awe and playing through it that feeling just grew, so many new things and seeing the pokemon i loved as a kid as 3d models really made me happy.
They were good games, i had a lot of fun and greatly enjoyed them.
(not having to shine a light at a gameboy was good as well)

This + the subsequent time period before pokebank was released is what made XY such fondly remembered games. If you pick it up right now (especially without internet) it becomes pretty stale quickly. But with everyone on the PSS and GTS playing fairly in a self-contained environment player interaction was the best it had ever been. I still remember all the good trade deals I got and the sheer energy included in simple things like Friend Code sharing for safaris because eveyone wanted to complete their pokedex and had to cooperate since the games were unhackable at the time.
