There isn't a league, Ash is doing some of the trials just to past the island challenge, he only has to do 1 trial on each island in order to face the Kahuna.
The SM series will most likely end with Ash completing the island challenge and getting a certificate and graduating Pokemon School.

Even if there will be a league in the anime, Ash will lose. We just need to accept the inevitable at this point. He'll probably place within top 8 at least, but that's it. Winner would probably be Kiawe or Gladion.

There's not enough time for the Alola League to be introduced when Gen 8's a year away and we haven't even seen him catch a full team yet, let alone evolve anyone.
If anything, his final challenge in Alola once he completes all four Grand Trials and Graduates will be helping Lillie patch up her family issues and the inevitable UB Arc.

Off topic, but I really wish they'd make an Orange Islands based game. No new pokemon. They could retcon it to have tropical pokemon from all regions instead of just Kanto. Starters could be treecko (gecko, tropical as shit), chimchar (monkey, almost exclusively found in the tropics) and squirtle (the whole blastoise ep + sea turtles). Diving in coral reefs, exploring volcanoes, a tropius pokeride basically everything that Alola should've been. It'd be really cool.

People were convinced Ash would win in Kalos for variety of reasons. By getting Alain down to his final pokemon he finally reached the point where he perform better without winning the whole thing.

Personally I think there will be less backlash. Sure going to the top 4 is a step backward like his performance in Unova was but it's expected now because SM Ash's skill level. As long he loses against someone who isn't an idiot I'm fine for now. I have way more faith in gen 8 Ash than SM Ash. If Ash can go from top 8 to second place he can go from Semifinalist to Champion right?
