Seems obvious. Remakes sell better than third versions/sequels while only requiring slightly more effort to make.

Yearly releases going forward might look something like this:
Gen VIII - > Gen IV remakes - >Gen IX - > third version/sequel - >Gen X - >Gen V remakes - >Gen XI -> third version/sequel - > Gen XII - >Gen VI remakes

It's a pretty good system because you want to put a little over ten years between releases for remakes. That way the people who were 8-12 when they played a game will be 18-22 when the remake comes out, prime time for selling nostalgia bait.

But they also still get the easy money of third versions/sequels and the main money comes from new gens.

Years aren't what really matter though. What matters are the updates to the system.

Between Gen 4 and now it's mostly a graphic update. No need for remakes until at least Gen 10 at this rate unless there's a HUGE shake up (which at this point would probably ruin the games because there isn't much more to change and still keep it Pokémon), though they'll almost certainly happen next Gen.
