it's a fucking pokemon and pokemon are products of fiction which reference animals or objects humans see in their own world all the time. so it's a fantasy creature the same way mythological creatures are: like harpies, sphinx, western and far-eastern dragons, medusae, all sorts of demons etc. etc.. all of them are amalgations of many things.
