I don't mind stories in games but the stories game freaks comes with are absolute shits. If you play only for the story then you should quit the franchise because there are plenty other RPG with better stories

I only started playing in gen 3 so starting off with some of the best games in the series helped

Also, the entire region is designed around the story by being made incredibly simplified and linear. Even if you can ignore the story it's emphasis can still be felt
