It was kind of a thing that anything evolving by stone didn't evolve again. Plus they generally didn't learn more moves kinda led to the idea stone evo's capped that line off. It was one of the few evo patterns they'd stuck to, but no one cared about it until XY because it didn't affect anything.
Mega's being a kind of stone evo, and XY seemingly keeping to the pattern, people tried to apply it to figure out what megas ORAS would bring.
Forgetting of course that marketing beats subtle semi implied lore any day
