Gameplay literally defines the narrative. The only Japanese RPG I can remember that does it properly is Dragon's Dogma. People barely talk shit about it's story and spend more time talking about their own adventures and events. That's how it should be.

They've always had good plots, the only problem with it now is that they feel the need to forcibly present it to you rather than let the player peice it together through exploration. i.e. Cinnabar mansion journal entries. There's tons of optional texts and npc's scripts throughout the older games that contribute to lore and world building in ways that the new games don't do. And this is a method that I regard more characteristic of what the Pokemon games are about.

You get dumped in your house with a smogon team builder on your PC so you can immediately battle people online?

You get dropped onto a deserted island and you have to craft apricorn balls to catch pokemon who naturally learn certain HMs to progress further on the island?

Without a story, it just becomes a 99 cents indie game like you find on your mobile playstore you can play while you're shitting on your toilet. Having a story gives an incentive to the player to explore all of the mechanics the game has to offer. There's more than a single way to enjoy a good game. You can enjoy a shitty indie game because you like the one and only one aspect of the game they focused on.
