Fucking thank you! I said that mimikyu makes absolutely no sense in game lore wise so many fucking times. It would make sense if pikachu was as popular in the actual pokemon world as it is in our world, but its not. Pikachu is loved as any other mon in universe so how the fuck can we have a whole species that's main purpose is to hate another species based on popularity that doesnt even reflect pikachu's weight of popularity in our world.

I also would think having many Mimikyus exist with other costumes as a matter of course, and Pika-yu is just the in-game representation, but I tend to headcanon away a lot of such things.

Pikachu is popular in-verse, but its nowhere as popular and as well known as it is in our universe. In the pokemon world pikachu is popular and loved but its not a mascot like it it is to us. And mimikyu is essentially the "bad" version of that mascot, but that would only make sense for 1 mimikyu, not the whole in-verse species. You can easily say Charizard is as popular as pikachu but no variant mimikyu's exist so its whole creation is based off pikachu being popular in our universe and not the pokemon one, which makes no sense. I mean if you want it breaking the 4th wall just fucking say it.
