I think SM showed us where the future games are going to go. Sub 100 new pokemon, new formes or updates for a couple dozen old ones and the in game pokedex only supports a subset of pokemon. The national pokedex is now only a thing in bank. If every three years they came out with 75 new pokemon by the year 2050 we'll still only have around 1700 total pokemon. That's more than sustainable.
