Some people want or need some kind of motivation to beat the game. Even if it's something as barebones and simple as the antagonist killing the hero's mom. Make the antagonist good enough, and that has the potential to become "man I can't wait to wipe the smirk off the antagonist's face at the end of the game." I haven't played that many mainline games but I honestly don't think I could sit through the whole ordeal without some kind of basic story to keep me interested. There are other ways to just battle. Couldn't agree more about cutscenes, though.

If you left it at the two complaints quoted above or just said "bad stories," everyone and their dog would agree with you. Not only that, but usually story-centric games, RPGs included, allow you to skip through cutscenes and story events rendered in-game just fine, therefore making it easier on those who don't care about story or for people who are replaying.

no, it doesn't. My argument does not have to do with wether or not pokemon should be story-centric, wether people should only enjoy it as story-centric, etc, but that if you don't like a story centric game, you shouldn't play the mainline pokemon games. I mentioned before showdown, it's the perfect replacement for those so allergic to story elements in this story-telling medium.
