Would anyone play a FR hack with a harder difficulty, some aesthetic changes to the maps (but still using the Gen III tiles), all the missing Pokemon, and the physical/special split being the only differences between it and vanilla FR?

I'm honestly just too lazy to script a bunch of new events and change the tilesets around. I've helped with too hacks that never got finished to care to do all that. I just wanna beef up Kanto a bit because I'm a genwunner and I know spoilers don't work

It's not great but the one they were using in the last alpha really needed replaced so I thought my shabby short loop would suffice. Used duty shifting for the first time. It's definitel something I need to use sparingly but I thought it worked as a substitute for arpeggios (which Prism added in its audio engine but I'm a purist who tries to keep things 100% vanilla).

About pokemon from different generations I was planning on the postgame idea I had to be Fire Red and Leaf Green centric so that would include wild encounters and trainers.

I'm still going to add some in like Pineco in Jagged Pass and Clefairy in Meteor Falls to name some but I'm mostly mixing around Hoenns dex primarily than just adding pokemon.

I've got (what I hope, I honestly don't know) a simple request that I'd like some help with:

I'd like to play one of those moe/tan Pokemon games where all the pokemon sprites are replaced with kids, but am looking for one with the following qualities:

-I'd the Fire Red/Leaf Green version or whatever the equivalent is available.

-I'd want the 50/50 gender split. I know some hacks have "100%" one gender or something, but I don't see the fun in that.

-No exclusive pokemon, please. By that I mean one version would have magmar while the other had electabuzz, just gimme both, etc.

-I'd like a version where trade evolutions are worked out. You know? Because you can't trade pokemon if it's on the computer. A friend told me they typically fix this in hacks by removing the requirement in favor of lvl or moonstone evolution. Either is fine, beggars aren't choosers, etc..

If anybody can find me a link to what I'm looking for I'd be incredibly grateful.

Polished Crystal is good but it's not just mechanical updates, it adds a lot of canon-and-non-canon content including removing some of the original 251 to make room for cross-gen evolutions.
TPPAC is a lot closer to what you're looking for, I think. It has extra locales but most of it is just places that are already canon and the ones that aren't are harmless like giving Moltres a dungeon in Cinnabar Volcano instead of Mt. Ember. Only thing that's not just a mechanical update are the Twitch Plays Pokémon references, which without context sounds like grounds to avoid the game but they're just bonus battles with trainer teams from TPP, there's like four of them.

Those would be fine additions and I even thought about Froslass before because it's just so damn cool. But the hack at least this aspect in particular isn't just about what would be cool to have. If this were completely my own hack I'd be up for it but it's still Emerald at the end of the day so I feel it's only right to think of what really is allowed to be in Emerald and Gen 3 as a whole.

Yes those evo/pre evos involves pokemon that were already invented when Gen 3 was around so at first glance it would seem okay but they were made with the thought of Diamond and Pearl not Emerald. That's why I only thought of Munchlax and Lucario being added over others only because they were introduced in the Advanced Generation series. If they weren't I wouldn't have added them at all. When the idea about the post game routes popped in my head I had more freedom to add it in because it didn't involve getting in the way of the main game but I am still restricted to think of what would work well.

You are right even though Budew would be a much better choice I am thinking purely Gen 3 when Roselia was a singular mon with no evo or pre evo.

I don't even know what sort of hack I want to make or which game it'd be for, I just picked Platinum because I haven't played it in a while. I think I might just go with hacking a Gen 3 or 6 game instead; they seem more "accessible" for just making some stat and difficulty tweaks (Gen 7 too, but I'm sick of Alola).

I tried to hack soul silver, and I will tell you this: go to gen 3, because the gen 4 hacking community is secretive, stagnant, and poorly documented.
There's one person who knows it all, (the guy who ported Light Platinum,) and he's prone to throwing fits. The people over at Wack-a-hack worships the ground he walks on, and that has given him a massive ego.
On top of that, he posts videos of what he's done without even an inkling of a hint to go with it. New pokemon? New moves? you name it. He's even added alolan pokemon.
He's promised to release information before, but it's never happened, and it probably never will happen. Mikelan knows the keys to gen 4 hacking, and he's clutching them tightly in his hands.

Yeah, trial and error will really help you decipher .spa files, a file type you can only view with a mario kart editor with no way to edit it.
And sure, you might be able to open up a hex editor and change the image itself (because it's there, in hex, you can see the image) but the information that precedes it is undocumented and tricky to edit at best. In fact, all I can figure is there's supposed to be palette in there somewhere (with transparent colors)

Everything I edit in the top portion of the file makes it crash. Yeah, the DS hacking community for pokemon is dead. The big hackers in the scene mostly overlap with the (actually alive) MKDS and the NSMB community. I usually have to pull knowledge from them and the translation projects.

I've been trying to figure these out for a month and a half, I think? And for about 3 weeks, it was all I would think about, even while I was working, or doing other things. One day, I might try again, but as I said, I am no programmer.

I managed to add new moves, but all they do is the struggle animation/struggle damage. I think it might be tied into ASM, which is far, far beyond my ken. Though I hoped if I added an animation, it would work.

This stuff isn't impossible, but the people who would know how aren't interested in hacking gen 4. The problem is newcomers don't know the right people to ask. The places with visibility are filled with armchair hackers who don't know any more than you do. They bite your head off to hide that fact, which makes people averse to asking questions. This keeps knowledge from spreading.

The disassemblies were started in response to this, but it doesn't seem to have helped. People just assume that no one in particular made them and take all the flaws for granted instead of helping to fix them.

The pokemon-unity fork is the last nail in the coffin for gen 4. I won't refer to it by name since it's being shilled way too soon.

Medieval anon here.

We did some research with my two collaborators and we have some hesitations for the setting. So far :

For all these settings, it will be a low fantasy -no other "magical" beast beside pokemons. Items also have some pseudo-esoteric source (they are craft by either alchimists or pseud-shaman/druid/priest). However, that does not mean that MC, NPCs or more generally everyone doesn't believe in something mystical things explaining how the world work. Not perforce a hard religion btw, but you get the idea. All these settings take inspiration on medieval europe, around AD 800. Think alternative history.

First one is based on Italian kingdoms and their mercenary. It have some anachronisms, since we think adding a old Rome city, with the Coliseum, and a lot of interessting cities at their peak (Venice, Florence, Sicily etc...). A great deal of rivalry between them ofc. MC is a mercenary voyaging between cities, for glory and money.

The second take place at the rise of the Holy Roman Empire, so a big united country and some not so evil pagan/celtic tribes trying to survive. Early plot not already fixed, but it may be fun if MC is actually a pagan.

Next is a saga in the viking age. The map is 50/50 earth-water. Think of the end of RSE (with better random encouters and better sea routes ofc). The story is more focused on exploration, and mystical elements have a more central role compared to the other settings. I'm afraid it will suffer a bad reputation because of the modern perception of vikings

The last one happen in the byzantine empire. No more idea beside the look of landscape and based gregorian chant.

What do you think of these early concept ? One does look more promising ?

I'm planning on including a small portion of Sinnoh at the end of my Crystal hack, and want to include a Red-esque secret battle against the Sinnoh Champion _Dawn_ at the end. The problem is that I don't know where to put her.

The idea is that the player will arrive in Canalave and will be, at max, confined to Canalave-Jubilife-Sandgem-Twinleaf, with Jubilife's north and east routes blocked off. My latest idea is to put them in Mespirit's cavern at Lake Verity, but I've also thought about the player running into them (like with the first rival battle in GSC when leaving Cherrygrove) on a route (218, 202, or 201) or in Jubilife or Sandgem.

The "minipics.asm" file was too big so I split it into "minipics1.asm" and "minipics2.asm"

I added:

For some reason when I created a new npc whenever I access the pokenav while the npc is in the players radius I become the npc. It resets when I go into a menu but I am not centered and the original player sprite is unchanged. I changed the npc to the opposite gender and it doesn't revert to my original self but the battle and trainer ID sprite stays the same.

NK Anon, here. A few threads back I mentioned that I wanted to include a Celebi shrine hidden deep inside a forest that would have a side event attached to it.

However, I've recently thought about including Jirachi as the legendary with the side story (or even part of the main story), leaving the forest shrine abandoned (maybe having a rare item next to it instead).

Thoughts?

Maybe. I just don't want to overexpose legendaries in a game that's supposed to intentionally deprive the player of top-tier mons; especially since they're mythical Pokémon. I'm not even sure if the player would be allowed to keep Celebi/Jirachi or be forced to release them via an event to progress.

However, if I do include Jirachi, I'm thinking of putting it in/near a cave lake hidden deep under a mountain, like Lugia at Navel Rock, where it has slept for 1,000 years.

Hmm. Yeah, maybe I'll roll both into the overall story. That, or make Jirachi part of the main story and Celebi as a bonus. I don't know.

The sprite icons are split into two .asm files
menu/minipics1.asm
menu/minipics2.asm

Charizard lines up with Eevee, Tauros lines up with Bulbasaur, and Totodile lines up with Nidoqueen

But the Bellsprout don't line up with Miltank.

So it looks like the icons are switching between Icon Banks

Have you read Roadside Picnic? It's the book that the movie Stalker was based on, which itself influenced the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game. It's set in the Soviet Union and also has an artifact that grants wishes. Might give you some plot ideas.

Totodile and Tauros appear normal. If I take one out and replace it with Charizard, it'll switch banks.

If I put Charizard in daycare, then leave Totodile/Tauros, it switches banks.

I'm a bit more thorough than that
I have one directory on my computer that I make changes too.
I have another directory that is always vanilla

I copy the contents of the vanilla to the build folder
then I overwrite with the content I've made changes to

Then I build the rom

When I make a new change, I delete the build folder, copy over the vanilla, and then overwrite with the new changes

It's tedious, but there was a long period of time where cygwin simply wasn't applying ANY of my changes and I couldn't figure out why.
Now I take the extra steps just to make sure that it actually compiles new

I downloaded your files, and checked them against the white-crystal repo you linked.
The files in the menu folder are a bit different, and it seems they've already done what you set out to do.

They've combined both "menu/mon_icons_1.asm" and "menu/mon_icons_2.asm" at the end of "menu/mon_icons.asm" rather than referencing both in "main.asm", as you have.

In your main.asm, remove the following lines:

SECTION "Mon Icons1", ROMX
INCLUDE "menu/minipics1.asm"

SECTION "Mon Icons2", ROMX
INCLUDE "menu/minipics2.asm"

and instead put them at the end of "menu/mon_icons.asm".

I can't build what you've posted, as I run into:
