As well as having a bad move pool. Yes, the coverage is good, but the moves themselves are bad.

Base 65 power elemental fangs...They are tantamount to physical hidden power types. Very weak, and only good for 4x SE damage. Coming off a base 90 attack as well, it's just sad.

Speaking of, that attack stat is Mightyena's highest stat.

As much shit-ripping as I did on this mon, I have to admit, it was my bro mon during my first Emerald playthrough. Best companion, with intimidate coming in real handy during a lot of the game.

Design-wise, I like Mightyena the most. In-game, I've always felt like Houndoom's the most useful, at least in Platinum and XY. Shows up too late in the Johto games, unless you use the Safari Zone. That said, almost any mon can work for ingame anyway, so it all comes down to taste. If you really wanted to, you could make your prized Kakuna beat Red.
