HGSS have comfy graphics, but but they'd be a lot better if they had as vivid changes between time of day as GSC had. Add in the BW soundfont and it'd be the aesthetically best Pokemon game.

Remember that art direction =/= graphics.

HGSS use the most vivid color palette of any of the games. While Gen III is brighter than DPPt, I think that Gen III is more guilty of having a samey tile set. HGSS mixes up the tile set far more than any previous game, but Gen II had some really interesting tiles in comparison to other games to begin with. National Park stands out immediately, or the Olivine Lighthouse, Ice Path, Tin/Bell Tower, and old Japanese-style buildings. The deep navy blue of night also made house lights stand out.

Honestly the second I picked up Heart Gold it felt wrong right away. Immediately it was more vibrant and lacked any artistic direction. Gen 1 and 2 had this watercolor theme to its artstyle that carried over to each town and city having a comfy monotone tint. I get it, at the time it was supposed to be a remake but still new but the new style abandoned any rustic feel GSC had.

Gen 4s tilesets were total ass, and I say that as a DP fanboy.
