They were balanced. Alain's next stronger pokemon after charizard were metagross (because Steven) and bisharp, and the others were decent. Compared to Ash's greninja (pun unintented), pikachu the strong (in the paper) goodra and the others, yeah, things were balanced.

Good that Dogasu reviewed the movie at its own merits rather than bashing it for not having Misty and Brock. Serena wasn't much of a main character ether, Her place was no different then Bonnie.
