GSC/DPP to BW is at minimum seven or eight years, maybe more (implied by the GSC Rocket Grunt having gotten married and having a kid somewhere in that age range).
BW to BW2/XY is two years (confirmed in-game and by the developers).
BW2/XY to SM is two years (confirmed by official promotional material).

So it's been 14 or 15 years minimum, and there's at least a chance that Red is 30 in SM. Thematically it would make sense, as the game was celebrating the 20-year anniversary of Gen I.

That is clearly a reference to the fact that she was the Salon Maiden in Emerald which takes place at the same time as Gen 1 which means it was also 10 years prior.

That entire story bit was pointless if that wasn't what they were intending to tell us.

Even if you ignore the fact that they are clearly just out of their teens at best, as another reference it makes perfect sense that they'd have been 20 and close to 21 as such because that's what the series was by the time they released.

Well do remember that in ORAS there were barely any Fairy-types in the dex to begin with, the only ones being the Azumarill line, Jigglypuff line, and Gardevoir/Gallade line, and Wally who's notorious for having Ralts as his starter, evolved Gardevoir into Gallade. It wasn't until XY where the type started showing up more and people started realizing it.

This was retconned in ORAS and they explained it. Historically, Rayquaza was the first Pokemon to Mega Evolve due to eating the meteors from space, and said meteors landed in Hoenn, thousands of years ago, but the only people who know that are the Draconids.

The Ultimate Weapon created the Mega Stones of Kalos when it went into space 3000 years ago, which was around the same time Rayquaza stopped the meteor that would destroy earth. Since the only ones who know the tale about Rayquaza were the Draconids, the first Pokemon to evolve through a Mega Stone was Korrina and Gurkinn's ancestor's Lucario according to Kalos lore and that is what everyone was taught to believe.

The only reason Mega Evolution is still a mystery by the time XY comes around is because the only ones who had it were Steven, Wally, the player, the player's friend, Zinnia, the E4, and Lisia who only ever used it if you challenged her in the Master Rank. So that's it, a select few of people actually even know the thing exists.

Cue 8 years later and more people are starting to learn about it, more research is being done, and Professor Sycamore can finally hire assistants to do research first hand.

Retconning is total bullshit but at least there aren't jarring plotholes.

Which is even more likely since after everything takes place he goes to Johto to find out why Latios/Latias left Hoen, which matches what happens in ORAS because you capture one and the other is left on Southern Island alone. This is 3 years later.

And then after that Steven goes back to Hoenn for his Champion duties because he himself says he's been away from the Pokemon League for too long.

So he's there for whatever course of time passes, and then finally by the time XY happens, he's in Unova in BW2 for the World Tournament.

It's highly likely that Mega Evolution, although shown in ORAS, because of the lack of communication between regional scientists led research to take longer than usual to start.
