I will probably get tons of flack for this but

I think Pokémon is one of those games where graphics are one of the least important things

although that's mainly because Pokémon is just so weird when it comes to being a game franchise

Story, music, and game play are what generally matter, not graphics. Graphics that look nice are just a bonus.

60 frames per second yet the animated sprites ended up looking pixelated as hell anytime they moved. In the over world, environments would be 3D with a dynamic camera while player and NPC sprites would be compressed and pixelated to shit. I never understood why BW went the 2.5D route. They should've stuck with 2D or gone full cock into 3D like XY did.

they looked worse on a technical level because of how low-res the sprites were

but the idle animations were better, lively, and more creative than the models' idle animations, and the colors were vivid and appealing

during inaction the pokemon were much more interesting to look at

models are definitely the right step forward, but there are too many polygons that make the 3ds chug, washed out colors, and lifeless idle animations

Graphics are actively hindering Pokemon. The more time and resources that goes into them, the more actual content suffers.

And actual content is what made Pokemon such a huge franchise. Imagine if gen 1 had only 50 pokemon and 4 badges.

Gen V wasn't consistent in every battle format and it only ran 30fps in the only part of the game framerate is close to important, in the overworld.

RSE has the worst in-game aesthetics in the series. At least RGB's battle sprites are so bad it's amusing, RSE's spritework is just plain bad.

Most idle animations in the recent 3D games are on par if not better than the Gen V ones, hell, some like Emolga are just the Gen V idle but in 3D. The issue is, unlike Gen V, the loop isn't consistent in what occurs when with no consistent rhythmatic cue, only happens in battle, only happens in battle when truly idle selecting what you'll do that turn, and depending on the camera angle currently being used you may not even see them when they do happen.

I'll respectfully disagree.

Many of the Pokemon's animations have been reduced to gently bobbing up and down or swaying side to side. Gen 5 had a lot more bounce and action to it.

I'd say they're better than Gen V solely because they actually react and have attack animations and whatnot. I loved Gen V (BW2 are my favorite games), but it really looked like dogshit with all of its sprites stretching and contracting like a hyperactive retard.

Gen VI added more weight to Golurk solely through its model and animations, turning it from a mon I had once overlooked to one of my top favorites.

I wouldn't mind if they went back to the 2.5 look, the gen 5 animated sprites could be expanded upon and have sprites for pokémon using a move or getting hit, overworld NPCs expressing emotion through bubbles like the following pokémon in gen 4, and they could just reuse the animated sprites and focus on creating new ones for the new pokémon which would be much less time consuming and would preserve the 60 fps
