I would create a game based on evolution; at the beginning of the game, you would receive a kind of amorph, slimy, colorless creature (let's call them EvoMon). Depending of the environment, it's activity and the way you treat it, it would evolve/grow/change differently. It would grow new organ, limb, horn, fur, change color, have body pattern, a certain diet, an unique personality and taste, ect... You would take care of it trough a kind PokeAmi interface, but more developed. There would be a shop who will sell product that would give unique change, such as rainbow coloration, plant organ (flower, leaf ect) and other cool stuff.

Battling would exist, but it wouldn't be the center of the game. There would be beauty or ability conquest, you could be a farmer/breeder and raise EvoMons that you will sell for money, be a caretaker who would take care of the EvoMons of other NPCs, be a kind scientist/professor who would work at a lab and make (more or less ethical) test on the EvoMons and trying to found/create unique evolution change, ect...

In short: a lot of stuff around the EvoMons.

Spain and France did carry sales for a number of L5 products though (notable example is Inazuma eleven, with sales being the most prominent in those regions compared to other European countries). Was enough to warrant continuing releases for the games there.

YW2 literally beated ORAS in japanese sells.
That's HUGE, to think that a similiar game can beat Pokémon in his own country.
Unfortunately, YK can't take on the western audience because of the concept based on the japanese yokai culture, and Level 5 is generally well known to kill their brand with a lot of annual more of the same.

You can use up to 2 S ranks, 2 A ranks and the other 2 range from anything on B rank to E rank. As the name suggest the higher the rank of the Yokai, the stronger it is.
Now, Shogunyan is a S rank Yokai. It is a glass cannon, if I were to make a comparison to a Pokemon it would be M-Lopunny. And given that you can use two of them, well...

Yokai Watch isn't one of them though. Bandai never expected it to perform well outside of Japan. This was evident to the point where Bandai of America didn't even want to localize the game. It was Hasbro, who often served as a rival to Bandai of America that ended up biting the bullet on localizing the game. With these events in mind, I imagine it was Hasbro that ate most of the cost in the failed attempt to bring Yokai Watch over seas.

Looking back at all these games, it's kinda sad to think that Pokemon has a monopoly on the entire Monster-catching RPG Genre to a point where literally nothing can really flourish and be a nice alternative to the trash GameFreak's throwing out as of late, and just gets buried into obscurity unless it's named Dragon Quest Monsters in Japan.
And aside from SMT, YW and Digimon, you don't really have alternatives that aren't indieshit unless you learn Moonrunes to gain access to the aforementioned DQM.

I would say that a bigger issue was how the localization was handled, rather than the Japanese culture in and of itself.
It also probably hurts that the game was being hyped as "the Pokemon Killer" by a ton of media outlets, which is a fantastic way of alienating a ton of potential buyers and generally killing sales. Seriously, when has that title ever worked out?
