It probably isn't in the code since Ash never wore the Johto hat in the anime

So I've been playing this game on and off since it came out on 3DS, and started over on mobile when it came to Android.

But I'm not totally sure that I'm doing it "right" when it comes to leveling or grinding.

I have yet to use any items, I'm up to stage 103, I don't proceed past a stage until I've caught the Pokémon which has taken many tries before, I've done a couple of the Expert stages and caught Venusaur, Blastoise and Charizard. But my best Pokémon are still only level 6 and anything more than Two Pikachu Skulls difficulty I don't feel like I can do.

Is it just because I don't spend money and just use hearts as I get them? Am I supposed to be grinding certain stages or rerolling skills? Should I ignore the special and expert stages and be rushing to the end of the main stages before I approach any of this?

When the game was new it was a reasonable thing to do go stage by stage, not moving until catching and even S-ranking if possible. However now that there are many pokémon that are more worthy I would recommend to rush through the main stages and catch just certain key pokémon like Xerneas, Mewtwo, Tyranitar and so on.
As for level grinding the first stop would be stage 125 I think? Ampharos specifically, Buneary works too. Then again I've barely grinded levels actively, they just level up naturally in EBs, normal stages and Meowth so do as you will or need.
And special stages usually have some good pokémon in offer so if possible get those first and after those go back to the main stages. Expert stages can be ignored after you get to the justice swords trio.
No need so far to pay in this game to advance as long as you're diligent with grinding stage 37 till the endtimes.

Welcome, hope you're enjoying the game! If you're past 250, congrats, Roserade was a bitch of a stage back in the day. I caught Deoxys using M-Sableye, Hoopa-U, Yveltal and Zoroark and had to buy Disruption Delay, Mega Start and Attack Power+, and I had to use a great ball and that's apparently less items than several other people used (I got really lucky with Hoopa's Risk Taker ability activating and getting mid to high rolls almost every turn). You'll probably have to use every item and try Mega Sableye since it perfectly clears the starting board. If you can't get it, don't worry. All these events repeat eventually and Deo-A isn't necessary to clear all the stages currently in the game. Good luck!

Oh God, was it ever. I remember getting really pissed off because it was the first stage I couldn't S rank. Yes, I know, event stage S ranks don't matter at all but I was S ranking all the main, expert and event stages at the time and was naive enough to think that maybe, just maybe, I could S rank them all. I think part of what pissed me off was that the best I could do was beat it with half the available moves remaining and it was my first encounter with a stage that didn't give an S for half moves left (maybe I'm misremembering). I'm saving all my coins for Mamobro so I haven't tried this current Regirock stage. Back then the trick was to leave a slot open for more Regirock on the field but I imagine a team like the one in your pic completely destroys it now.

On an unrelated note, I'm kind of regretting skill swapping my Dusknoir to Sleep Combo with this latest EB, the buff to LDE is really nice and I don't want to have to use another SS on it plus cookies. I was the sole memer who SS'd and grinded SC to SL2 during the first M-Zam competition when there was a Dusknoir special stage available and they had just given it access to SS and RMLs (mine's level 15). The funny thing is, after the enhancements I spent and the effort I made to max it out, Sleep Combo barely actually proc'd during the comp (when it did, it was on the few turns when I didn't have massive combos) despite the pretty high chance. If it had, I might've actually had the number one place.

I don't remember. It's just not that beautiful A-Meowth layout. Hit 4700 the first shot, then used a jewel I had from a mission card and went like 3,500, 4,000, 2,500 with an MMY team. Awful.

almost fully invested Hera will almost evolve in 1 turn like mbee.
When mb+ triggers you get 6 icon for the mega bar. But fully invested hera only needs 8. The missing 3 are from the 3match. And since you get 3 icon from the match you dont even need to fully invest in it. hence even when missing one candy it will still evolve in one mb+ activation

Ooh, clutch itemless victory in 200 with Hera/Yvel/Hoopa-U/Drakrai. I got a lucky Sleep Charm proc early on due to the fuckery that occurs with turns and barriers. It got a N disruption off though, so I thought I was finished by I managed to squeeze it out.
