Posting this again. First-time spriting GSC-style. Made GSC Dawn OWs. Anon in nuked thread said they sucked.

How can I improve them, since there's only so much 16x16 can do?
>>
Has anyone tried making a "standard" RPGmaker game with pokemon sprites and graphics? I've just aquired all the sprites and am now writing a story. Thoughts on the general idea?
>>
>>32984099
Why would you? Essentials has perfect Pokemon gameplay mechanics. I don't get why anyone would want to go backwards and make a vanilla RPGmaker game. Maybe a PMD-esque fangame could work, but it'd need a lot of effort put into it.
>>
What did I miss? Why did the last thread get nuked instead of archived?
>>
Is there a romhack for gsc where you can have Pokémon following you?
If not, I'd love to try and make it
>>

Prism was suppose to have that. They might add it in an update.
>>
>>32984099

Speaking of Prism, I really wish it had more of those pokemon-only areas.
>>
Are there any RSE difficulty romhacks or RSE romhacks that don't stray away from the original game? (Or at least have a good plot revolving on Hoenn).
>>
How do you change the shiny rate down to half in FrLg/RSE?
>>
>>32985915
Open the Scripts in RPGMaker and go to the "Settings" section. Look down and you should see a variable called SHINYPOKEMONCHANCE. Change that value to whatever you want and you're good to go. It only takes a few seconds to change and it's very convenient. :)

How many extra Pokemon can you add to a Gen III game again? I know it's just 5 for Gen II

As many as you want. Just go to the pokemon.txt file in the PBS folder and add as many entries as you want. It's very easy and flexible.

Azurill doesn't even become part Water until second stage, and has a secondary typing (Fairy) unlike Magby and Elekid. You could always go a more unexpected route and just have two starters, with your rival always picking the opposite. I think that'd be pretty neat.

I've had this dream of bundling several original games into one GBA ROM where the PC storage system is shared across all games. Something like RSE, FRLG and remakes of GSC and Yellow. I don't know how much effort it would take because I'm not great at romhacking in general, but it would be really cool if this is at all possible.
>>
>>32989648
I don't see why not, but it will take a lot of work

I'm still here. Just lurking for now, and reading for books about NK for reference/character inspiration. Everything I'm making is being temp built on a separate ROM from the final. I'm still trying to find out how to properly clean a Crystal ROM of all the vanilla maps so I can start over there and start inserting mine, all without bricking the ROM and causing the compiler to shit the bed from endless errors once the maps are gone.

It was done for Pia Carrot's Orange hack and for Prism, so there has to be a method to it. Either that or I just didn't do deep enough on my deleting spree. Thoughts and suggestions?

And btw, if I manage to successfully do it, I might just upload that to GitHub to save others the time. We'll see.
>>
>>32991046

I use the pokered disassembly. When I played around with adding new trainers to routes, I tried using a sprite that was not previously on that route, and the result was a buggy mess of a sprite that had only one frame and not even of the sprite I wanted.

Tried looking around for some quite of sprite set or other limitation of which sprites can be displayed where, but I found nothing. Closest I could find is the trainer overworld engine

https://github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/engine/overworld/trainers.asm

but even that doesn't seem to contain anything that would limit one to use any trainer sprite in any map.

You're limited to a set number of sprites per area, and can only reload said sprites to use different ones by reloading the map (e.g. putting in a route gate).
I'm not that familiar with pokered so I can't tell you what everything here means but this is where that code is.
>>
>>32992948
It's nice, but I kept thinking of how this piece would better be used for an early rival match or evil team encounters, it never really reached a climax or got serious and instead maintained the same mood through it all. Get busy with it, a personal favorite of mine is adding heavy drums in the background to bring it some additional serious beats.

I assume you've already checked the canon themes, but if you haven't, here's a video with them all, check the comment for time stamps for each gen:

Has anyone else played "Pokemon Bonfire Stories"? Pretty unique fan game as far as I know. I really enjoyed it
>>
>>32993024
That's most definitely what I'm looking for, thanks! Will check later if I can use existing sets for the new configurations I want, if I should make any new sets, or what happens if I'd merge one or two sets together.
>>
>>32992948
Not going to lie, it's not great. I really don't like that piano sequence that continues through the whole thing. The sequence itself sounds fine, but when its combined with the bassline, it sounds very dissonant. There also isn't much of a distinct melody. The strings just kinda plug along without music purpose. You need to build and release tension in music, otherwise its just kinda there. The drums are also very weak. They're boring and unchanging. Nothing about them scream "Battle Theme".

What I do for Pokemon Styled Battle themes is I work on an interesting bassline and get it done for one whole section. Then I use the bass to make chords, and use those chords to write the song. That might not work for you, but you should try it. Also, I almost never go with the first melody I think of.

Just started today. Route 1 is coming together.
Any tips? Ideas?
>>
>>32993373
Looks very comfy. The straight path is a bit too long without any variation. Not necessarily a bad thing, I would just watch that in future maps. You don't want exploration to be too boring. Also that ledge at the bottom seems a little too long. I'm assuming there will be an item at the end. I would make it so that the right side starts a little closer to the house and extend the grass to the left a bit more.
>>
>>32993373
Needs unskippable grass. Doesn't have to be a lot, but if you can ignore all the wild encounters altogether it makes the route boring.

the grassy patch on the far left could be expanded, add a cut tree that goes into a little inlet beneath the entrance of the route with a little pond and an item/trainer
>>
>>32995569
Not that guy but here is some general advice on mapping. Go look at the routes and towns you like and try to figure out why you like them, think about how the player will progress through the map if they've never seen it before and if they can only see a small square of it on their screen.

For that route I think the ledge at the beginning that the player has to jump over could be removed. With that there they can't backtrack if they're trying to heal up or go back for any reason which unless you're trying to make that punishing seems a tad harsh for route two.
>>
>>32995569
The grass could be cleaner. In-game grass is normally used in patches rather than scattered.
>>
>>32995742
patches aren't really needed as long as it doesn't look messy.

Does this list of pokemon do the ocean areas justice instead of just Tentacool and the wingull line? So far the ocean around Dewford has Tentacool and remoraid. The Sootopolis and Mossdeep area has Wailmer, Sharpedo, and Corsola. Lastly east and west of Pacifidlog has Wailmer and Gyarados. Every area has the Wingull line and Route 134 has Wailord for convenience. I dont want to add anything that looks like it shouldnt be anywhere other than the region it was created in plus I'm saving others like Lapras and Mantine for other areas.

How do I stop being dumb?

I want to learn how to use essentials but every time I try it feels like my brain is going to melt. I'm a low-functioning autist. The most complicated tool I've ever managed to use without getting headaches is Mario Maker.
>>
>>33001040
Read the wiki and look at the example maps
>>
>>33001054
I've been trying, but that's what makes my head hurt.
>>
>>33001085
Do it one step at a time then. Make a new map, try and make the player character spawn in that map when they start a new game.

Then you can try creating a NPC that the player can talk to in that map.

Then you make a second map and try creating an event that moves the player to the second map when they step on a certain tile in the first map.

And so on.
>>
Newfag here. Should I use essentials or romhacking?
>>
>>33001253
See >>32993758
>>
>>33001253
Depends. Do you want something that actually feels, plays, and looks like a Pokémon game? Or do you want 3edgy cancer full of meme-tier fakemon, pathetic attempts at grand plots, knock-off-looking menus and battle graphics, and crappy midi music, all of which can't even be ported to run on an actual Nintendo system if you so choose, instead giving you a crappy .exe file?

To reasonable people (i.e., not faggots like >>32993758), the choice is clear.
>>
>>33001253
Essentials. It's more flexible and you waste less time trying to get minor shit to work. With ROM hacking you're pretty much forced to make a gen 2/3 knock off and developing new features without someone spoon feeding you tools is a fucking headache.

I did low level programming once. It's not fun.

>you waste less time trying to get minor shit to work
Once you become competent with either platform this is a non-issue.

>With ROM hacking you're pretty much forced to make a gen 2/3 knock off
And you're not with essentials? Last I checked it's not 3D and can't make anything that looks like a DS era or later game.

Also, C is a language that exists and can be used to write new code for the GBA and DS games. You do still need to be able to read assembly, but writing it is just making things harder for yourself.
>>
>>33001253
ROMhacking > Essentials
The Unity engine actually looks like it won't make me vomit the way Essentials does but it's a long ways off from completion. Essentials is poorly optimized and only works on PC.
As to which game you should hack, each one has its postives and negatives. Gen 1 and 2 have full-fledged disassemblies with lots of labels and comments but it's written entirely in assembly and you have to work around the limitations of the Game Boy Color. Gen 3 obviously has a lot more potential, but only Ruby and Sapphire have a disassembly and it's not as far along as the ones for Gen 1 and 2. Most people hack FireRed or Emerald, and you're limited to using pre-existing tools or hex editing and have issues like trying to find free space and not messing up any hard-coded values.
If pokeruby was as far along as pokered and pokecrystal I'd tell you to use that, but it's not there yet and we haven't seen any magic with that disassembly yet so I wouldn't have much to convince you anyway. It's all up to you.
>>
>>33002440
Should also mention that the pokeruby disassembly is (or will be for the parts that aren't done yet) written in the C programming language rather than assembly.
>>
>>33002330
>Once you become competent with either platform this is a non-issue.
No. There is always incredibly minor shit that can break ROM hacks no matter how good you are.

>And you're not with essentials?
No. Look at Ethereal Gates for example. It looks nothing like a gen 1/2/3/4/5 Pokemon game and it has its own unique aesthetic and screen size. With ROM hacks you can't even work in gen 4. It's quite sad, really. There are also plenty of Essentials games that have unique mouse interfaces or online features. I have yet to see either of these with a ROM hack.

>You do still need to be able to read assembly
Which is exactly the problem. There's no point doing this when I can just use essentials instead and program whatever I want however I want without needing to delve into nitty gritty bullshit.

It's quite telling that whenever there's not an essentials vs romhack argument in these threads the only discussion going on is some romhacker asking how to do something that would only take 2 seconds if they pulled their head out of their ass and just used essentials. Your game can be played on phones? Who cares, because you're never going to actually finish it, and if you do finish it it'll just be an uninteresting piece of shit.

>Dynamic/modular character customization
>Unique Game Corner minigames or sidegames like contests or pokeathlon
>Animated battle sprites
>Online battling/trading
>Completely unique battle UI
>Screen and sprite size/resolution changes

I'll wait.

Why mouse controls?
Asking too much for gen 3 and 2 anon. It doesn't matter either way.
Emerald
Again Emerald
Play Showdown or real games if that's all you're interested in.
Why does that matter?
Go back to /v/
>>
>>33002817
Can't do mouse controls obviously but I'm not sure why you'd want those for a JRPG
Character customization could be coded with assembly/C depending on the generation. Prism already has it, though it's not modular, and the most customization I've seen in Essentials is on par with Prism's.
Unique sidegames can be coded.
If you mean animated sprites during the battle and not animated intros I don't think Gen 2 or 3 have the VRAM for it, you got me there.
You could code a new UI if you wanted.
And I feel you're just looking for shit to nitpick about with that last line.
>>
>>33002817
If Essentials is so great, tell me how I can play it on my GameBoy. Or at least on my Android tablet emulating a GameBoy.

What's that? It's a ridiculous demand because Essentials is for Windows and ROMs are for GameBoys/emulators? I'm asking about features of the hardware system, not the games themselves? Exactly.

I know this isn't anything big but I just had this little idea of having the trainer sprite being able to swap between the Emerald redesigns and the originals from Ruby and Sapphire at a certain point in the game. Maybe like a key item that only changes the clothes of the player but I'd be stumped on how. I know in Red Adventures it's been done as a replacement for the bike. I haven't worked on this in a bit, and I'm probably gonna start over, but I was interested in some opinions before I do. This is only up to the third gym, which is in the larger city. There's a lot of shit I learned from all of this so far, like to avoid the mistakes I made on Route 6 (walking on the mountainous areas is a mess to design).

None of the events are on the generated maps, like npcs and shit, but I was just making a simple throwback style gen 2 game. No grand plot or anything, just start in the bottom left town and go on your adventure. Some villain shit eventually but then the E4. I got so into the mapping that I forgot about some fundamental plot related shit, like the HM roadblocks. I probably won't start over entirely, but it does need to be reworked. I really enjoy working with the Gen 2 style because of how restrictive it is.

A learning experience is never a waste of effort. I'm most likely not going to start over, though. It'll just take some redesigning to get shit working tighter. Since I'm using Essentials GS, it's all Gen 2 shit but with Pokemon up to Gen V. I was thinking of doing Dark for the first gym, with the TM being Embargo. Prankster Murkrow and all that.

There's obviously a chance, someone just needs to do it. Gen 6 and 7 both have basically-complete sprite sheets and Gen 6's even has backsprites, Gen 5 is basically the odd one out, probably because it has the most 'mons of any generation so it's the most work

That's the problem. You're not making your own game. You're just knocking off an official game. No one cares about playing your shitty romhack on a phone if it's just a barely modified version of an official game. Essentials games are individual games I'd actually want to play.

You're the one moving goalposts. I asked you to post your game that has hundreds of thousands of downloads yet you still haven't done it. This just came to me: Has anyone made a Red hack where you say yes to the Rocket grunt at the end of Nugget Bridge, thus creating an alternate Kanto journey where Red, three years later, is feared as a villain rather than hailed as the legendary hero who defeated Team Rocket? All the events would play out just like in Red, only the player would be on the other side.
>>
>>33020539
That would be a lot of work, and it'd be a pain to balance the story and events to ensure neither choice was the objectively right one.
If it was just the standard Pokemon Red experience if you said "No", no one would choose that path so it might as well force "Yes".

The whole plot would require a lot of revising to make sure both choices resulted in a good experience.
It could probably be done, but it'd require a damn good writer, or even a team of writers to make work.
>>
>>33020630
No, I mean one where it forces the "Yes" option instead of the "No" option. As in, there would be no "No" option, or at least not one that could be chosen and allow you to continue the game.

Pre-Nugget Bridge, the game would be the same (or mostly the same) as vanilla Red, but post-Nugget Bridge would be new.
>>
>>33020683
That concept may have been toyed with before. There are a few Team Rocket hacks.
>>
>>33013590
Does the engine require coding?
>>
>>33020696
Yeah, I see a lot of hacks where you start out as Team Rocket from the beginning (like Team Rocket Edition for Red and Rocket Edition for FireRed), but so far none that let Red join TR. I mean, it'd basically just be a script and event hack, as all the maps and Pokémon would stay vanilla.

I might have to try my hand with pokered disassembly and see if there's something to this idea.

I'm usually a sucker for snowy towns, but this feels a bit too much like a pit stop.
The Pokemon Center is the first thing you see when entering from either path, and it, the gym, and the mart are all on the town's edge.
The residences seem like more of a side attraction than anything else. The residences should be the main focus of any town, since its main purpose is as a home.

Everything seems just a bit too neat and planned, which results in a snowy town somehow not feeling cozy.
A distinctive landmark would do some good as well to bring some character to the town.
