Also because Feraligatr in general is more useful and you need to spend a bit of time to train some of the other Water-types you can encounter. The ones that give it the most competition (Slowbro, Quagsire) are slow and end up costing you time.

Sorry, nope, you're still wrong. Typhlosion gets Thunderpunch, Cyndaquil does not. And unless you're grinding only Cydaquil (in which case this argument is irrelevant because solo runs are retarded), you're stuck with shitty moves for quite a while due to Johto's level curve Totodile gets Ice Punch right off the bat and doesn't fall over to Miltank or require investment in other Pokemon for that part of the game.

Smogon actually has a ranking system for in-game runs and Totodile is conisdered to be amongst the best, better than Cyndaquil and Chikorita (though that's not saying much for the latter). Abra is considered the best to use though.

So Typhlosion is easy, Feraligatr is standard, and Meganium is hard
