The shell doesn't look attached to its body, it looks like it's covered in tape (or a onesie), it's a scrawny little bitch even though everyone portrays it as muscular like feraligatr, and the arm shield thing, while cool, is very rarely seen, much like delphox's wand. Combine that with the fact it had one of the coolest animals to grace the planet as its inspiration and STILL fucked it up, and it's no surprise it's one of the least popular starters in the entire franchise.
Seriously, who does chesnaught appeal to? Not normal people, almost everyone will pick greninja. Not standard/waifu furfags, because delphox exists. Not bara furfags, because it's skinny. What should we do for the evolution? Let's shove it in the thing's sleeve where you'll never see it, that seems clever. It could've worked as a staff or something, maybe. Again, though, we hit an issue of appeal. Primarina, while one of the weaker water starters, goes all in with the whole "ima grill btw" shtick, and appeals to a certain demographic. Fine. Braixen seemed like it was on a one way trip to furville, but then delphox is kind of neutral. Normally you want that in a starter (see: sceptile, charizard, and empoleon, to name a few that could be easily depicted as either), but it's kind of a big jolt when you go from braixen to a sort of wizardy thing in a robe/dress. Dewott goes through a similar process. Anyway, braixen already alienated people like me who thought fennekin was cute but don't want to play verlis simulator, but then delphox alienated the people who liked braixen by trying to get back to the middle. The antiwaifu furfag people already left, it's too late. Even then, if you're going for a wizard theme, why just a wand we never see and a robe? Give it a hat, or staff, or something.

I think the reason all of these things are so bad is that you can see a good design in there somewhere. Already covered delphox (hat + staff) and chesnaught (it's a glyptodon, put it on all fours and bulk it up). Samurott is one of those rare cases where a mon would be better off on two legs instead of four. Even if they did a sort of conkeldurr thing, where it used the swords as braces to stand itself up and fought with them, that could be neat. You can really sum up the bug problem with two words: quadrupedal swordsman.

Emboar is delphox before delphox existed; pretty solid first stage, then it stands up. But again, if they had such a hard on for Journey to the West they could do something cool with it. Give it a neck, a proper pig like snout instead of that muppet head, change the physique so it's less "round circle with stick arms" and more "strong demon pig." Make the belt thing feel less tacked on, I don't know. Swap it and samurott's stances; make it a bulky quadruped who can rear up and attack, make samurott a bipedal swordsman.

Just hate the way this thing looks like they literally stretched out Marill and called it a day. Empoleon doesn't make a lot of sense but it was never my favorite to begin with.
And the Gen 5 starters were experimenting with the dark/fighting/psychic matchup which explains the weirdo typing.

Incineroar being dark type isn't unjustifiable, it's just that the justification supports a change in design from the previous forms that make the pokemon look stupid.

I can't agree more. Worst Pokemon by far. It ruins the Gen1 experience, because, if I want to minimize my exposure to it, I have to either start with Squirtle or Charmander. If I start Charmander, I box it immediately and release. If I start Squirtle, then I already have a Water-type, and my Gen 1 playthroughs almost always turn into near-monotype runs with Water, Grass, Poison, or Ground.

Aegislash, disgusting shit to use and fight against. Has stupidly good stats with that ability and a decent movepool. Either you carry a very strong special mon or risk it with mindgames if you go physical.

Also Slowbro, in particular it's mega is something I simply cant' stand, that stupid face of both it and it's tail makes me want to punch it.
