Basically what the subject said. Competitive VG Pokemon has been a thing for years but its nowhere near any support outside VGC. All these other games are taking the eSport stages but Pokemon seems to only be small side events for a couple hundred dollars.

Switch the official competitive format to singles, it's what people are most familiar with and attracts a larger audience

First, move it to switch, or at least provide a Stadium-like sim on it. The game is unpresentable in its current state, especially if they insist on doubles.
Second, include more "cups" with interesting rules or banlists. People want to see lots of pokemon, not the same 8-12 with slightly different builds every few months. Even your average MOBA has more variation than a given generation's VGC.
Third, make getting a "competitive" pokemon babymode easy instead of an autism staircase to make for larger playerbases of more reasonable and relatable people.
