I started with Gen 1 when it came out. Normal types make the game way too easy, when it's already the easiest generation by far. And I hated it back then. I don't think that's the best way to put it. Kanto games aren't good just because they're simple, I think the true charm comes from the sincerity behind it. These games weren't made to make money, Game Freak just wanted to make a genuinely enjoyable game before the company went down. Later games are mostly a cashgrab and it shows, despite what fans like to tell themselves (though I think B2/W2 had a lot of honest effort for a modern game).

A RPG with 150 classes would have been impressive even for the PS1 and they pulled it off for the fucking Gameboy. Also the scope of the game is gigantic. You have to fight against team rocket, the gym leaders, your rival, other trainers, the elite 4 and it even had multiplayer capabilities. Learning TMs and VMs was fun. Reading the Pokedex to learn more about the world was fun.

The world was huge and lively. Sometimes funny, sometimes scary. It was just a gigantic, autistic adventure for autists. That's the best way to put it. It was made with real love. You can feel the love emmitting from every pixel of this game. Later games are soulless cash grabs.

1st Gen was good, but suffered from balance issues. It is very lacking in post-game, but people forget that's essentially what Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 were since there are no modern ways to easily/officially recreate the experience.

If they ever remade gen 1 with a Pokemon Stadium themed Battle Frontier, Johto/Sevii Islands, and "South America" post game it would be the best.
