Because the anime makers are retards who have no idea what they're doing. They seem to think that putting gen 1 nostalgia-bait shit in will attract attention, but they don't seem to get why it would attract attention or that it would be from old adult fans who want to see everything gen 1, but they know the target audience of little kids wouldn't actually care and so they stuck the usual characters-of-the-day and current gen mythical in there. In Japan, the voice actors never changed. Why the hell would the Japanese writers care about some dub voice actors for a foreign english dub? Brock's VA voiced him all the way through DP and he voiced Ash's Greninja in XY. Misty's VA also came back to voice her cameos after she left.

I don't know, but I don't like it either. I'm not even the biggest Misty and/or Brock fan, I'm even apathetic towards them, it's just that we've grown up with the series and of course watching these two being Ash's companions was a part of our childhood. Nostalgia playing a trick on this movie as well, I do wonder what was the train of thought here.

You can cry as much as you want about the new characters being somehow necessary for the newer generation and the newer generation no longer acknowledging either Misty and/or Brock or not wanting to learn more about them, but would re-introducing them again really make the movie worse in any way? Or maybe they're trying to retcon them as companions in order to age them further (like GS old) so Ash faces against them while still having the new companions.

Fuck if I know. I'm not liking the Chipmunk face syndrome either, it's slowly consuming and taking hold of several characters' designs. And even the pokemon they own have already been overused in previous movies and seasons. Why showcase them again? They could have given them interesting new picks but no, just have them have the popular mons from the fourth generation. Again. Dawn already had Piplup, which we already plenty of in the entire DP seasons plus more Piplups that appeared along the way. Maylene had Lucario. Sir Aaron had Lucario. Cameron had a Riolu which evolved into Lucario. Korrina had Lucario.

Seriously, we have over eight hundred pokemon and Game Freak still insists on using these particularly specific pokemon for further shilling, even though they already have so much popularity.

Anon, Makoto and Soji are obviously going to play a role in the plot somehow. People usually bitch about how the companions from the TV series usually just stand around on the sidelines while Ash and the new movie characters the plot is written around do shit, but in those cases they need to be there because they're part of the group.

This movie is a standalone retelling, so there's no point in introducing two pointless characters that play no role in the movie at the start and then just have them stand around while the audience wonders what the hell the purpose of these two was.
