For me, the last episode of XY is the last episode of the series in general. Unless the anime somehow improves in Gen 8, I'll consider XY the end of Ash's journey. The last episode felt like a "final" episode to the Ash we'd been watching for 20 years as well.

SM does feel like a new timeline. I'm thinking M20 will firmly prove that the series was rebooted. For me, Indigo league to DP was one series, BW&XY was another one, and SM is a totally separate series.

Everything points to SM being "canon", same goes for BW, but they just feel so out of place in what would have been a relatively coherent story.

Hopefully the next anime will be in the same vein as DP and XY Ash. I'm okay with having some seasons be lighthearted, and others taking a story-driven approach, but at this point I'm not sure if we'll ever get that again.

I completely agree. In hindsight I feel silly, but before the finale aired I was convinced Ash would win and Alola would have Ash setting up the Pokemon league or some other shit like that.

To be completely honest though, I think DP would have been a better end to the story, mainly because of BW, but also because there was a real connection from Kanto to DP.
