Not really, they just didn't want to spend time thinking of designs for new Mega Evolutions each generation.
Likewise, we probably won't see many new Z Moves once Gen 8 rolls in, let alone Regional Variations.

The mistake was give Megas to pokemon that already are strong, like Metagross, Salamance.
Mawile and Beedrill are the perfect example of how megas should had to be.

Z-moves are a poor substitute. Only reason to ever use one is ingame when there's basically nothing else for a hold item.

megas were a good idea for shitmons, but it was poorly executed by giving it to primarily 3 stage op shillmons

z-moves on the other hand are utter gimmick garbage
