This is the updated world map of Hoenn I have so far. The area on the top left is a later half of verdanturf tunnel which will connect to Forina Valley. The other area in the middle that connects Mt. Pyre, Route 118, and 134 is post game much like how the top right island of Sinnoh was and later routes was for Unova. There will be various things to do in there but I'm not sure what yet. I plan on making the two islands next to the Battle Frontier accessible too.

As the other anon said, the disassembly is a huge advantage. Things that would normally require tools can just be done by editing text files, and things like finding free space are handled automatically by the compiler.
Ruby and Sapphire also have their own disasm but it's not as fancy regarding things like labels and commented code and it seems people are waiting for it to get more polished (that's an issue with the hacking community as a whole, just waiting for other people to do things for them, I admit I have the issue myself) before they perform some magic with it and really show off what you can do with that disassembly. If pokecrystal and pokeruby were identical to each other in terms of progress then the only reason you'd hack Gen 2 is because you like Gen 2, which is my reason for hacking Gen 2, but right now you also have the advantage of a more polished disasm.

Mapping is one of the only things where you still want to use a tool (albeit one written for the disassembly, like crowdmap), and I don't think there's a disassembly-based map editor for Gen 3 yet. And don't expect the guy who made crowdmap to do it because he expected someone else to make a better version of crowdmap and nobody ever did because they were too complacent and I don't think he'd make the same mistake again

Why haven't any of you or the people in the wider Rom hacking community been able to over the hurdle of Gen 4 Rom hacking?

I would kill for a proper gen 4 Rom hack. Not just some re-skin with stronger trainers. I wish someone would create a new story line in the gen 4 engine.

Does anyone have the ambition to make said breakthrough?

There was one person remaking Light Platinum in the HGSS engine, but outside that people just don't want to put the effort into it I guess. Why bother with it when you can just hack a game people have already put the needed effort into making it easy? That's the attitude the Pokémon hacking community has.

More easily-accessible hacking tools, more easily-accessible mapping tools most of all, and more documentation. If everyone who hacks Gen III got together and started working on shaping up Gen IV hacking, huge progress would be made quickly, but most people aren't interested. Even Max, who was doing a ton of shit with Gen V, moved to Memessentials because of the difficulties.

Not really. In order to do that I'd have to make it south of town but the world map permissions don't allow me to go any farther down than that. I think Granite Cave was supposed to be the attraction spot of the town. Sorry man. I'll try to figure something out and if I ever do find something I'll post it on this general.

I think a compromise of >>32926716 's suggestion would be a small grove on top of Granite cave. Maybe a few colored version of the pebble pile tile from RSE color coated as Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Possibly a maze like thinned out forest with a couple Cut-sized trees to make it seem slightly resistant to vegetation, being hard rock and all. A path to a cliff face atop the entrance of the cave. Mt. Granite and Granite cave. Gems, shards and evo stones spawn from Rock Smash... and so on.

The top would be too small for a grove of any sort and even if I added in a few trees it wouldn't be anything note worthy.

That would be impossible palette wise from what I believe as far as only using A-map.

A maze would be too big and the thought process behind it seems too complicated than it really needs to be.

I ran the alpha anon posted on my really old toaster a year or so ago and it was smooth like butter. Admittedly it could lose its smoothness later on as more features get added and the game becomes more than an overworld simulator (there's no battles yet to my knowledge) but for now it seems great.

The git grep function is great for finding simple things like this. If you search something like "Welcome to the" you get a handful of results. One of those is in text/common_3.asm, and checking that will show you Oak's intro speech with the label "OakText1"
Searching OakText1 will take you to the file engine/intro_menu.asm, which has Oak's opening speech. Said file also contains data about where to spawn the player, setting "SPAWN_HOME" as the spawn point. Searching that string of text will take you to constants/map_constants.asm, and just searching "spawn" will show you there's a file called engine/spawn_points.asm that marks what the actual specific map and coordinates are for said spawn. If you wanted to change the home spawn to a different map, you'd just change it in spawn_points.asm and adjust the coordinates to where on that new map you want the player to spawn.

CrystalComplete is basically the physical/special split with extra optional stuff on top like an alternate soundtrack selectable in the options and Voltorb Flip (it doesn't replace the slots or normal card flip).
