I think M20 will have a saiyan-saga esque conclusion. Ash will be about to win against Cross, but his Pikachu will run out of energy because of the tied-in promotional Z-move, Cross see a chance and is about to overkil the rat, but Ash steps in to protect his fallen mon. Then Ho-Oh finally appears. He recognizes Ash's courage and bond and dismisses Cross intentions. Then Ash and Co. go their way, but Cross steps in, grabs Ash by his collar and says to him with a menacing tone to finish their unconcluded onslaught, because he can't accept the fact a lower class trash like Pikachu could be able to severely damage his Incineroar. He leaves saying the next time he'll be ensured to destroy everyone of Ash's Pokémon and letting him devoided from his dream because he won't accept Ash's philosophy.

Then a rainbow feather falls down, Ash grabs it and the movie ends.

Now that you mention it, was Greninja being Dark type ever relevant to anything? It was in the eyecatches, but in the show nobody ever even brought it up, not even when he was battling Gardevoir and whatnot. Anytime Greninja being weak to something was brought up it was in the context of him being a water type (Thunder punch etc).

Didn't even learn any dark moves (still don't get why they never upgraded him to Night Slash).

I'm not hoping for them to have a major influence on the movie, but for them to have established reasons for joining Ash besides that "he's an interesting guy with an interesting Pikachu".

Soji is going to be the infodump character since he's a researcher in training. He'll probably explain what the Alolamons are to Ash and new attacks/evolutions instead of Ash having to use a Pokedex.

Bonji will probably be used only to tell Ash and co about the legend of Ho-oh and Mt. Tensei. He'll probably expand on the Johto Dog trio during the exposition.

Joy will be used in a minor role, treating Pikachu after the Spearow attack which gives Ash and Makoto a chance to meet and to be the reason Team Rocket is named.

Cross is the main villain it appears, a rival to Ash and someone who wants to be the strongest. going so far as to fight Ho-oh.

Makoto though, she's the one I can't figure out. We really don't know enough about her at this point to guess what her role will be.

A large reason why he did so well against gardevoir was because she could only attack with moon blast (takes charge time) and shadow ball, instead of the OPness that is anime psychic. XY in general avoided anime psychic though.

Saying "50 episodes in a season" doesn't work for an anime like Pokemon. We have no idea how long this season will go, for instance XY lasted 93 episodes before the season changed into XYZ.

The Pokemon School is a "hub" for all the cast members to get together and interact. Ashs goal isn't a League this time around, it's to graduate. To think that they'd do the graduation mid series is mind boggoling considering that when Ash graduates he'll be leaving Alola to move onto whatever is next. What'll likely happen is we'll reach a point in SM where we get a "vacation" arc, that allows Ash and likely Lillie to go off to Poni Island or Ula Ula together to learn about Nebby who's 99.9% likely to get a Puni-chan like role in the anime.

I'm gonna watch the series all the way through over the next few weeks. I've been watching all day today and I've just finished episode 20. This is gonna be a long ride, but I'm loving it so far.

I'm finding myself noticing dub stuff I never would have as a child and it make me laugh. It's been over a decade since I've seen most of this stuff, some stuff is just how I remember it and some stuff is way different. A lot of jokes and gags I never noticed before. And a lot of lore. I just love Pokemon so much.

I had some specific VHS tapes I used to watch a ton when I was a kid, and I can't wait to get to those episodes. And to see a lot of stuff I've never seen before.

There's a lot to happen before he even gets near fighting Oliva. Expect it to potentially happen around episode 50.
Rockruff needs a few episodes dedicated to it now that we've had it exposed to both Lycanroc forms.

Team Skull needs to make an appearance, as does Gladion and Type: Null given how they were shown in the magazine. This fits in with the above and Rockruffs growth. Ash needs to actually have a trial given to him and defeat one or more Totem Pokemon. Then he is allowed to fight Olivia.

Rockruff is going to evolve on Akala, we just don't know which form.
