It does have a plot. Lillie has slowly been bonding with more Pokémon as she learns to get over her fear of them and touch them. SO far, she managed to bond with her Alolan Vulpix, Ash's Pikachu (she won a battle with it), and Ride Stoutland. Her relationship with Ash has been building up as well. Once Gen 7 is over, Lillie will go to Kanto with Ash and then travel with him again in the Gen 8 region.

He's never said that. His stated goal was to "acquire Z-Crystals and master Z-moves", and he's obviously not going to get ALL of them. He's never said anything about wanting to pass the trials, the only reason he's showing an interest in Olivia's trial is because he specifically wants the Rock crystal for his dog.
