It's easy and cliché to make a character you always defeat someone stubborn and angry. "Oh you beat me only because you cheated." "Oh I only lost because you caught me by surprise." Hau is in the same position as all other rivals; he is always second best and always inferior to you.

It was refreshing having a rival who accepts his fate in the end. You're supposed to feel bad for him. It's a fantasy where you happen to be the best in the world and what happens to people who are not. It should make you think of the people who have it worse off than you.

Mallow should have been the rival

Blue is not known for his cool kid behaviour, but because you always were one step behind him, you had no reason to get a pokemon nor a pokedex, but yet, with the odds against you, you did better than him.

From that point rivals have been either edgy kids or overfriendly kids, i am not saying this is bad, but most of the time it just felt like you have to win because nobody else can.

Hau is aware of this, he is not strong, witty or even a strategist, he is just the grandson of a kahuna, he is expected to be like his grandpa, but he is just dumb, and his journey ia not one of "i will be stronk :DDD" but "maybe this is not my job" one.

But actually though. I'm mad they didnt play up Serena's emotional struggle more. She steps out of her parents shadow straight into yours. You take her mega ring, her chance at the league and become the savior of Kalos.

I constantly think about how to fix XY and one of my ideas is that Lysandre finds the broken Serena and seeing the potential in her gives her a Mega Ring so you end up fighting her during the Team Flare HQ raid. That way you don't have to fight Lysandre three fucking times in a row.
