Hey /vp/,
I was wondering what you were thinking about nicknames for your Pokémon. Do you usually give them names, or do you just use the specie default name for each Pokemon ?
I would actually like to give them nicknames, but I never manage to find clever ones, whenever I think of a nickname I like I always end up finding it a bit cringy a few moments later.
What do /vp/.

I don't like to give my Pokemon nicknames. It makes them feel like possessions as opposed to friends.

Never heard that but I understand your point of view. It's just that people find it usually weird when I tell them I don't give my Pokemon nicknames, they think it makes them special

On initial runs, I never give Pokémon nicknames because NPCs don't often do it. I like to think of the protagonist as a normal Trainer like everyone else, so blending in with the other characters helps me get into the game a little more.
In Nuzlockes or subsequent runs after I know the game more, I'll usually be a little more lenient. I don't keep a theme, and I name them literally whatever first comes to mind. For example, in my Moon run I'm doing now, I named an Oricorio Breezin' because it was windy outside when I caught it.
I've tried giving them nicknames, but I always end up calling them by their species name in my head. So I don't really bother any more.

I think other trainers do sometimes nickname their Pokemon, it's just that it's never shown in battle, kind of like how Battle Spot censors strangers' nicknames. In BW and BW2, there are some trainers that can be traded Pokemon and be battled later. The nicknames you give to those Pokemon won't show up in the battles. Similarly, almost every ingame trade has a Pokemon with a nickname. Other trainers also won't acknowledge your Pokemon's nicknames much, since they don't know what you call them. In Sun and Moon, Lillie and Kukui mention your lead Pokemon a lot, but refer to them by species name instead of by their nickname.

Both. With few exceptions most Pokémon get a nickname (usually being a family line name as I'm using the same families as when their origin Gen appeared or since Gen 3 in the case of Gen 1 and 2 Pokémon which did get the family names of the past Gens like Blazik the Charizard, which was a much better name before Gen 3, but I still use it).
Mythicals and legends, however, almost always keep their default name because it seems wrong to do so to them.

Do you not give friends, coworkers, etc. nicknames in real life?
Also, would hate to be your kid since you apparently won't bother giving them a name.

>applying how people play a game to real life
don't do that

I'll only nickname my pokemon if I can think of decent names for my entire team, otherwise it activates my almonds if I have some with names and some without.

That makes perfect sense, actually. I might reconsider whether I nickname in initial runs now... Nice idea, anon.

I'm a huge faggot so I only name my Pokémon the Way Red or Gold would do it in the Manga.
