Welcome to the /hdt/! What is it?
>/hdt/ is a place for any serious, academic or scholarly discussion about Pokemon.
So why should I care?
> A containment thread for extreme autism, so as to not disturb the cancer pervading this board.
>Pokemon isn’t realistic enough for you? Prove it using physics or biology!
>A place to talk about philosophy!
>Anything in foreign languages.
>We don’t have wars here; we have discussions and debates. If you don’t like a Pokemon, explain everything that you don’t like about its design.
Comments here should be well written.
Every image should be a complicated diagram, or tasteful art.
We mock every grammatical error here.
All who violate these rules will be driven out using clapping.

I had an idea of redesigning how Pokémon battles work, for sundry reasons.
I made this to illustrate how to think about Pokémon battles, while redesigning the way that they work.
"Abilities" does not mean what it normally does here.

Human languages, sadly enough, lack the finesse to describe smells properly. This is because scent is actually the most complex sense.
Humans can actually discern 1 trillion different smells.
Septimus Piesse, a French perfumer, made many discoveries related to odor.
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16378/16378-h/16378-h.htm
Piesse actually invented a musical instrument for releasing Odors, and he showed how some smells go well together.

>>
>>32900900
No, not all Pokémon come from eggs. This can be easily proven by the Diary in the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, stating "FEB. 6 MEW GAVE BIRTH".
One does not give birth to eggs. This was also in the Japanese original version.
Of course, Pokémon Origins altered that line of text, so they may have retroactively removed that reference.
>>
>>32900993
I remember an old thread about the complex rl lore of the lake guardians, apparently their "helmets" make up a three of life or something. I'll try to look it up when I'm not on mobile. It had diagrams and everything.

This reminds me though, Palkia and Dialga. I think Dialga's symbol and type are diamond and steel because it's supposed to endure the passage of time like a diamond by being hard like steel. Palkia's symbol is a pearl because, between the game itself, space is said to "expand", wich is what a pearl does in a way starting out as a grain of sand, and it does so while inside a clam in the water hence the water type.

I've been thinking quite a bit about how terrains work in the real world. A human and it's pokemon have the same relationship as a human and his pet, pokemon are essentially pets that could very well overpower you but are taught or choose not to, be it because of friendship or because you can provide your pokemon of things they are simply unable to get.

Something similar, for example, happened between humans and wolves at least 10000 years ago. We needed something from them and they needed something from us, creating cooperation between them which is why we domesticated the grey wolf and got the current dogs as a result.

Humans and pokemon shared the common willingness to survive, but humans where the first ones to domesticate other species for mutual convenience and soon the first human societies were born, this is also why you can find "early route" species close to human civilization.

Even then, this didn't happened with all the species around, as fully grown species can be dangerous if not raised from their base form like the pseudo legends or many of the low friendship pokemon, and others are naturally dangerous like grimer or ferroseed.

I'm slightly drunk, bear with me, I just wanted to get those thoughts off me

Fairy type is totally the ayyylium type

It's often associated with the moon, including lots of rabbit pokemon being fairy (like azumarill and wigglytuff) when the rabbit is associated with the moon in japanese folklore (see: the rabbit pounding mochi/medicine on the moon).

Lots of fairy types are the infamous "pink blobs" and/or are in the Amorphous egg group (Gardevoir for example). This associates them with things that are slightly unearthly in form. Clefable, one of the "pink blob" fairies, is straight-up associated with the moon and evolves using the Moon Stone.

This is not to say that all aliens or pokemon associated with the moon are fairy type (we have Beeheeyem, Deoxys, and Umbreon as proof of that), just that fairys are aliens and/or associated with the moon. Think frogs vs toads and how all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads.

Alternatively I'm reading into it too much and they just seem unearthly because fairies are not really of this world; you could substitute "extradimensional" or "paranormal" for alien if you wish. That's not as fun though.

What would Pokemon food chains look like?
The Pokedex in Sun and Moon alludes to a lot of possible chains. For example, Mareanie is said to eat Corsola, but what eats the Mareanie? And what does Corsola eat?

>>32904737
Mareanie is based on the crown of thorns starfish, so maybe you could look at what real-life animals eat the crown of thorns and then see what those animals' Pokemon equivalents would be, then say those are the Pokemon that eat Mareanie.

To that end, I found a site that says the crown of thorns starfish is eaten by the giant triton snail, the stars and stripes pufferfish, the titan triggerfish, and the humphead maori wrasse. I guess the Pokemon version of the pufferfish could be Qwilfish, and the triggerfish could be Bruxish, but I don't know about the sea snail or wrasse.

As for Corsola, the dex says it absorbs nutrients from water, so I guess that's what it "eats".
>>
>>32904871
The humphead wrasse can also be Bruxish, since Bruxish is shaped like one.

When I found Ever Grande City for the first time, it bothered me severely.
There is not a single house in that place, so how can it be called a city?
Sometime later, something snapped, and I realized that it WAS the best city.
I think that Game Freak was trying to illustrate something important.
It's a city of FLOWERS. (Why not count them?) How many Pokémon live there? You can't see them in the overworld, after all. (Victory road has some, but I wouldn't count that as being part of the city.)
Perhaps, the developers were trying to say that the best city is the undisturbed natural world.
...I still hate them for it. But it's an interesting philosophical point.
Perhaps it only counts as a city because of the presence of the Pokémon League. It's a city by technicality.
It has no crime, no debt, no fires, no unemployment, no traffic, and no pollution. This makes it the best city.
Has anybody else though about this so deeply?

If mew and smeargle can both use transform, shouldn't they be able to breed with any pokemon, similar to how ditto does it?
Mew being unable to breed is most likely just gameplay/lore segregation, so I'll let that slide.
But that still doesn't answer why smeargle can't breed with all pokemon.
Im starting to think egg groups might just be bullshit.

I'm particularly enamoured with the idea of pokemon having so many different types. One thing I've done is translate them into uncommon languages, including latin.

I've recently seen someone else doing the same thing but the thread was dead before I could respond, so here's my own take on them.

Normal : Normalis
Fire : Ignis
Water : Aqua
Electric : Fulmen
Grass : Herba
Ice : Glacies
Fighting : Pugna
Poison : Venenum
Ground : Terra
Flying : Volucris
Psychic : Mens
Bug : Bestiola
Rock : Petra
Ghost : Spiritus
Dragon : Draco
Dark : Tenebra
Steel : Ferrum
Fairy : Mythologia

Some of them I'm not too proud of, any correction appreciated.
>>
>>32914379
Yeah, I'm that guy from that other thread.
"Normalis" isn't the word I would use, since it comes from "Norma", a carpenter's square. It means "right-angled" more than how we use it in English. I would say "Ordinarius", because it conveys the meaning more accurately.
"Ignis" is a literal translation of the English name, but the Japanese name is more accurately translated as "flame", which is "flamma" in Latin.
I see no problem with "aqua".
"Fulmen" isn't a bad translation either, but "Electricitas" could also work (the quality of having electric charge, not the English meaning of "Electricity")
"Herba" is a good word. "Gramen" could also work, but it's not as common of a word, and it means almost the same thing.
"Pugna" literally means "A fight". "Pugnans", from the verb "Pugno", means "fighting" as a participle, (i.e. a verbal adjective)
"Venenum" could work, but I also like "Virus".
"Terra" has more meanings closer to "land" than "ground".
I would use "Humus", or possibly "Solum" instead.
"Volucris" works, but "Volans" also works.
"Mens" means "the mind". "Mentalis" would be the adjective from that.
"Bestiola"... I had not thought of that. I was so sure that "Cimex" was the only word for "bug" in Latin. It could work.
"Petra" isn't a native Latin word. (My internet cut out, so I wasn't able to check if it was actually used.) "Saxum" is the closest that I could get to the English meaning of "Rock", but "Rupes" isn't far behind.
"Spiritus" is inadequate. (It literally means "a breathing", generally used to describe the living.) I would say "Phantasma". "Manes" works, but it has a unique meaning.
"Draco": this is as good as it will probably get. The problem is that the Romans understood it to literally mean a kind of serpent. "Imperator" (emperor) would capture the Japanese meaning more accurately. I would use "Draco" anyway.
About "Tenebra": I said "Dolosus", meaning "tricky" or "crafty". "Nefastus" also captures the meaning of being "evil" or "wrong".
>>
>>32914379
>>32915274
Continued:
So it seems that Petra is, indeed, a Latin word.

For "Psychic" type, the name in Japanese is "ESPer". (Extra-Sensory Perception.-er) In the card games, it's "Chou", which means "Super-, Hyper-, Ultra-, Extra-, Mega-, Para-, Trans-" in English. Latin Wikipedia wasn't of much help.
https://la.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecinesis
So in the spirit of the Japanese original, I say that it should be "Magis" or "Magnopere".
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus:text:1999.04.0059:entry=magnopere
Here it says that "Magnopere" is often used with words denoting mental action.
I want to use the verb "Mentior", but it is connected with deceiving.
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0059%3Aentry%3Dmentior
"Cogito" is better.
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0059%3Aentry%3Dcogito
So "Psychic" could be "Magnopere (Cogitans)".
"Ferrum" means "Iron" as well as "Steel". "Chalybs" means steel exclusively.
It's not easy to translate "Fairy". "Diva" and "Mythicus" seemed to be the only possibilities, until I found "Fada".
https://la.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fada
>>
>>32915431
>>32915274
>>32914379
So here is my personal translation (having not turned everything into adjectives yet):
Ordinarius
Aqua
Flamma
Electricitas
Herba
Glacies
Pugnans
Virus
Humus
Volans
Magnopere?
Cimex
Saxum
Phantasma
Draco
Dolosus?
Chalybs
Fada
