This just popped into my head just now.
Back in 2010 or 11 when Black and White were a month or two old I battled a guy. It was near the end, he had a Mespirt and a Celebi while I had a Gigalith and another pokemon. Gigalith survived both attacks and I used Explosion KO all four pokemon.The battles ends with my lost but all 6 of our pokemon fainted. I told him it was a tie but he said he won. Is it true that he won?

He won because your pokemon fainted first. You willingly sacrificed which ended up fainting yours first, meaning you lost first, meaning he won.

The opposite is true for iron barbs, Rocky helmet, or rough skin.
