Johto, Kanto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are all in a vaguely Japan-shaped county, Unova is on the east coast of a USA-like polity, etc.

Sinnoh is canonically just up north of Johto. There aren't thousands of miles as that map implies. In HGSS you walk thru a tunnel to go to Sinjoh Ruins.

In lots of media, "earth" (usually lowercase) is often used as a catch all for "this planet" or "whatever planet this is" whenever the name is unknown. It's likely that the "earth" in the Pokemon universe isn't ours, although early on places like the U.S., India, and South America have been either hinted at or mentioned, the last of which still remains in Mew's Pokedex entries. It's most likely "an Earth" or some fictional Earth like planet. The bottom line is there isn't much stock to put into Pokemon's geography, as there are far too many inconsistencies and anacronisms. The devs probably didn't put a whole lot of effort into the geography because they don't expect little kids to give a shit. The human mind seeks out familiar order where there probably isn't any. It's best to just refer to it as "the Pokemon world" like most media does.

Pokemon World is not Earth. Regions are BASED off of locations on Earth & certainly the first four main series regions are tightly based on the geography of Japan.

But if it were Earth, then why is there a region based only on the geography of New York City while there's another region that's based off of France? Think about it. Unova would have to be much smaller in scale to Kalos, but it's not.

While the Pokemon world probably was initially considered identical to Earth by the creators, that idea has been debunked from around Gen V on.

Yeah. The regions are much smaller than real-life regions, closer to the size of a really big city and its countryside. The world is propably mostly water with few, far-between islands.

Also, while Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are shaped exactly like and modelled after the respective parts of Japan, Unova, Kalos, and Alola have noticeably different shape to them, and are said to have a motif after their respective locations.

Think on how Nosepass is modelled after a moai statue, but has a compass motif.

Kanto\Johto\Hoenn\Sinnoh are modelled after Kanto\Kansai\Kyushu\Hokkaido. Unova\Kalos\Alola have a New York\France\Hawaii motif.

Character X may have been modelled after race Y, but it's just as likely that they only look like that because of a Legendary (likely Xerneas) choosing their appearance at birth, and their descent is'nt from the region who has a motif of the place which is that race's original homeland IRL.

Unova isn't based on solely New York City, it's based on the entire New York bay area, including Manhattan, Staten Island, Narrows, Coney Island, and part of Long Island.

Combined this area is not that much smaller than the regions of Japan prior games are based on.

Lt. Surge is the lightning American, most regions roughly mirror Japan, and numerous Pokedex entries reference real places like India, China, and South America.

The Pokeworld is roughly the same as the real world, just set in a weird dimension. The first two generations made this pretty clear, although the series change in direction has obfuscated this a bit. The Pewter City museum referenced the moon landing and implies Pokemon may even be aliens.
