They have been matching events to movies for most of the series life. 2018's movie now has no event if USUM isn't a Gen 7.5 or they don't release 8 next year.

Since 7.5 is highly unlikely, you're left with one option.

And, no, the "new Pokémon" thing in the Direct isn't likely telling us of Gen 7.5 either.

Mega Mewtwo Y was called a new Pokémon in the 2013 movie promos and X/Y trailers as well. No reason to assume they're not talking about Necrozma's Formes we've already seen as well as possibly some more Mega and Alolan Formes.

Patterns matter to them regardless of whether or not they matter to you.
