The anime is made to promote the games, so Pokemon after all is a game series. Of course, anyone can enjoy the anime as itself, but the rules of the anime/manga universe are not applied to anything besides it's own universe.

The games are the base of the plot, character's design, ost, everything of any pokemon adaptation. There's no full canon tv show until now.

Canon's just another word for official. Anything official is technically canon, even if they don't take place in the same universe

canon = official story
anime is not canon besides having it's own story and continuity

for example, in harry potter, the canon is the books, not the movies. In pokemon, canon is the games, not the manga or the anime because they are not adaptations, they have different plot.

canon in a franchise is everything that is part of the original source/work. The game IS THE CORE SERIES, and everything in this franchise revolve around the games.

Canon in Naruto, DBZ, GOT = the manga or books and everything that the mangaka/author creates and say it's canon

Canon in pokemon = the games and everything the games creators say it's canon

Satoshi said the manga is the story that approaches more the universe he created in the games, so anime = not canon.

It doesn't mean the anime is not an important part of the franchise, but it's not canon.

Manga is not canon as well, but it's aguable. As it has a different story, uncharacterized characters. OCs and different rules, etc... more likely the manga is not canon as well, but closest to the source than other serialized works in this franchise.

They never comented on generations anime or origins, but more likely it's "more canon"and faithful to the core series than the manga and anime.

I think there was a time that the anime were aimed to portray the games at least on some extent, and Ash were supposed to be Red's counterpart.

Nowaday, Game Freak made Red very different than Ash design and story wise, to make it clear they are completly different characters.

The same can be aplpied to the manga as well. Satoshi and Masuda talked about the manga in some interviews, but i'm lazy to search it. I'm quite sure other posters have it on hand now.
