I like the Nido family but one thing has bugged me for 20 years. What the fuck are they based on?

At first I used to really hate Nidoqueen's shiny with a passion because I expected it to be pink because continuity you know.
But with the years I started to really like her shiny, it's so unique compared to the rester of her line. It stands out.

Nidorina in the second TCG Game Boy game was the best. It could cheese through most of the game, and you just needed the common Nidos to support it.

When will the fix the breeding issue? It always looms the unfortunate implication that a Nidoking/Nidorino can only breed with a Nidoran.
