I think I'll try going starterless for once since I've played GSC so many times. I'll probably dick around with the roster as I play, but I think this is a good start.

Word of warning, even in game ariados is just really shit, I've tried to use it in gen ii several times and by the elite 4 I have to drop it for something or other that has more durability and hits harder than a dry spaghetti noodle

That's all I'm thinking of so far, nothing set in stone except the starters. Might use Sudowoodo/Togetic/Eeveelutions but not sure. Maybe Hitmontop if Tyrogue evolves properly. Snorlax for post-game in one of them.

For Pokemon Gold I'll be using my original team from 18 years ago. I already prepared a Porygon to trade over to Gold once I start.

For Pokemon Silver, I'm gonna use my original Pokemon Crystal. Hopefully they'll release Pokemon Crystal sometime in the future.

I dunno, I'll play silver since I basically 100%'d gold last summer but I'm not sure what to use. I find playing gsc a bit annoying because it seems like most johto mons either come late in the game or have shitty stats/movepool, and I've already used most kanto mons at some point because they're fucking everywhere in the more recent games.

Are there any good poison-types worth using? I know you can get the sludge bomb tm fairly early if you go straight from ecruteak to mahogany, but I wouldn't know to whom I should teach it.

Ariados is not viable in gen2 ingame unless you dump a bunch of great TMs on it. Or unless you grind, but that goes without saying.

That said, simply by the natural course of learnset and movepool expansion (and just a teeny tiny bit of base stat buffing) Ariados is extremely usable in SM, and yet Ledian is *still* perhaps the most useless fully evolved Pokemon, period. The only thing it's really good for is setting up Reflect/Light Screen, but you can use literally any other monster for that as well.

when I used heracross in crystal it did solid damage even with non-stab return. reversal comes at lv44 which is a bit late but you can make do with normal attacks until then, maybe even splash out and give it earthquake if you've got nothing better to use it on

i think the real issue is that it's stuck with fury cutter until it learns megahorn at lv54

Bill's grandfather gives you one on Route 25 (so you'll be fighting Lance with a Weepinbell), and that's the only Leaf Stone in the game. You can obtain one Fire Stone, Thunder Stone and Water Stone in the same way. It sucks, and they didn't add the random-trainer-calls-and-gives-you-a-stone feature until Crystal.

Although you could send it over to RBY and evolve it there if you can link up with a Gen I VC game.

I honestly don't know much about Mystery Gift in Gen 2 so I've consulted Bulbapedo for info.
It sounds like you need another copy of GSC to communicate with in order to use, you get a random item each time you use it (but it can only be used five times a day), and the evolution stones are "rare" items that you can get from it. Seems pretty luck-reliant, but if you do get lucky, it'd let you get multiple copies of each stone as early as Goldenrod City. Probably worth a shot; I can't see why they wouldn't implement it into the VC releases.

Because it's kinda garbo. Ingame, you can just use X items on any old Pokemon instead of dedicating a team slot to a Baton Passer (who, in this case, has the brilliant typing of Bug/Flying with a million weaknesses and subpar physical defense and merely acceptable special def). Likewise, while Reflect/Light Screen are actually good to use ingame (lord knows Reflect/LightScreen/RazorLeaf/BodySlam Meganium is an awesome support mon ingame), there's a million better users than the fragile Ledian who literally cannot run any other moves. Johto shits all over the Grass-type as a region, and most of Grass-types available to you in a Gen II playthrough suck ass anyway. Gen I has super-crit Razor Leaf, Gen III on has less awful Pokemon, moves, and learnsets, but Gen II is a fucking dead zone for Grass. Very little fun to be had, unless you enjoy spending 15 minutes on every trainer.

Still, unless they made some major modifications, it's going to require another 3DS since it's more or less just cross-gen trading. Back in the day you could put your gen 1 cart in your friend's Game Boy and trade between your own gen 1 and gen 2 games, but that's impossible or an insane hassle with 3DS since both games are in digital format on a single machine. So you need to trade your gen 1 monsters into your friend's gen 2 game, and then trade another time between your and their gen 2 games to get your Pokemon transferred between generations. What a bother.
