I have Popplio and Slowpoke and have been farming sunken treasure off them, but diamonds still seem to rarely drop out of them, and 5 and not nearly enough to save up for some of the purchases.

All the items that give you bonus coins are pretty good. The main one to go for is the Shaymin planter though.
I'm not sure if 1.0 introduced any other items that give bonus JP on food or something like that, if it did then those are probably pretty good though.

It's hard to say if supports or items are better. Items are just permanent stat upgrades but are mostly not super useful.
Some support mons have really good skills but usually also very long cooldown times.
Overall I'd say supports are a bit better though.

And yeah, farming diamonds reliably isn't possible on 1.0 anymore sadly. I really hope they'll eventually introduce another way to get diamonds because until then, anyone that updated really is kinda fucked.

and every 20 seconds a random other berry spawns too, along with the weakest berry

If you aren't planning on buying the diamond miner, the best guy to get first is Piplup, and upgrade him first. You double your training every 90 minutes, it helps tremendously. I would suggest the JP pokemon next like Litten or Greninja.

I actually am pretty sure that a lot of it isn't RNG at all. There's still some RNG to be sure, but some things are decidedly not random, like the first time you buy a new training routine, it will always use it the next time you train.

There are also some other patterns I've noticed too, like the longer it's been since you last played, the more likely it is to throw rare shit in your face and use higher level training. Also, once you've "exhausted" certain random events, it really doesn't like giving them to you again until you wait a certain period of time.

I'm pretty sure it's pure RNG with some rules on top based on length of playtime and some other factors.
