I love the update. it shows the worst players and how sad their existence really is. Like this Mystic cuck right her. When gyms went live not even a hour after they open this guy had Blissey's and Chansey's in almost all the gyms spots he took. After busfagging around the city this autistic had 48 gym spots with 27 3000+ Blissey's, 19 random CP Chansey's and 2 3400+ Tyranitars. I didnt even get to fully bussing around my city so he could even have more that I didnt see.

...it works exactly like that you dolt. The limit is just on total coins per day. If your pokemon is in for 100 hours, you get 100 coins. If you have 5 return after beimg i 20 hrs, you get 100 coins.

The issue is if in that same day you have another mon come back when it had coins to give you, you dont get them because you already got 100 today.

I'm still only level 30 but have 5 Lucky Eggs left. I fought many gyms and accrued enough coinage for 400 box space and 500 bag space. Tonight, I got 14 badges and many of them I still have possession of the gyms. Will I make the cut?

Rotation is easier so camping gyms are harder. Spoofers are cheaters of the system, so they always get to slither by the drawbacks.
Additionally you can't have the same mon in the gym to prevent maximum tierwhoring the whole gym.
Also, the fact that they're stops, CP deteriorates, and gym badges are earned regardless of fighting means everyone can participate in them much more instead of getting stalled out by 2.5k CP Blisseys.

Spoofers are affected if they dont 24/7 play and fly to their gyms giving berries each time. Even then, the super obscure gyms never get battled so omce they reach max coins, the pokes are trapped in their until taken down with no reward.

Id say for the non-exploit crowd, it keeps everyone on the same low coin income. No groups of high level players dominating entire cities (moderate size ones at least) since the cut in overall spaces makes them fight each other more. Instant space also makes it easier for people to just hop in too, no training needed (and no 'training range' mons taking up storage). Beyond that, its much more difficult to shave mons out now since it requires more battles. If a gym is built well (tank first to protect those behind) shaving will make most gyms far weaker overall.

Coins only come to you when the pokes who earned them leave the gym. If you had, say, 10 gyms held for 10 hrs day 1, you get no coins. Its only when you pokemon fully loses motivation meter AND THEN loses a battle does it return to you with coins if it earned any.

If for whatever reason the above scenario plays out another 10 hrs, but immdiately after all your gyms go down, you only get 100 coins, despite having 200 hrs worth of defense because the daily limit is still 100 coins.

Because in most active communities, the turnover rate is high. In the old system, you grabbed as many gyms as you could and then cashed out. Now, you need to wait hours to get a fraction of the same amount you used to get.

If you live in a dead community, then great. Your mon will be in there forever. But that also means you don't know when you'll have coins since you actually depend on someone from another team to bring it down.

This gym update made it a huge hassle to earn cons regardless if the player community is active or dead, those who benefit the most will probably those who cna reclaim gyms during the week and then reap the rewards when people play during the weekend, but that's about it.

I had hoarded some coins before this update though, so I have already maxed out my bag again and still have plenty left for incubators, but since the coin revenue is abysmal now, I'll return to my old habit of only using incubators for 10 km eggs.

Niantic took several steps before to help gyms not just stay one team. Increasing prestige lost/gained by using smaller CP mons was the first time.

Gyms can still sit 1 team for a bit, but the thought is now even solo players will see the motivation is low enough to see its worth it to only have to fight 6 pokes 1 or 2 times each. The old way every solo guy whould just say "fuck that" and move on. Now they eventually get low enough that people will attack them.

The "set timer to collect" issue also made a caste of people who effectively ran towns, even without exploits. Now every one of them are also getting less coins per time spent playing, so it evens the field more.

I get the feeling we are going to see a sweet spot for gym turnover. Having a couple "forever gyms" was good in the old system, but now you might have more hours spent than the coins you get, and having that one come back just fucked the rest of your earners that day who return. Also 20 in 5 hours is not doable in a lot of areas, wether it be number of gyms or number of players per volume.

At least for my city, i feel like if you some how manage 60-80 a day you'll be doing pretty hot, but only the really active (or most bots feeding/picking when ripe) will get there

My town has about 13 Gyms and is completely dominated by Instinct, mainly because all the taxi drivers in town play regularly and all picked the same team. So obviously all the gyms are back to being maxed-out Instinct gyms with the same mons as before, and I have absolutely no incentive to take them down; I'm the only active Mystic player in town, and Valor has two semi-active players left who usually don't bother with gyms, so I'd be fighting gyms on my own for no reward (Valor and Mystic gyms never last more than 30 minutes here, ever. No exceptions. Not even at 3am).

But you know what the best part is? The best way for me to fight back against Instinct is to not fight back at all. If I don't knock their mons out of gyms, they don't get any coins; their defenders are stuck there doing nothing for them, aside from building up a coin reward that they only receive when I feel like letting them have it. Sure, I don't get any coins either this way, but it's not like I would get them anyway with the current system.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Nice. Not sure if I even need to buy more Pokemon slots if they were to expand upon that too since keeping prestigers is pointless now. Gonna hold off transferring them because I want to see if this update gets adjusted later down the road (maybe defending mons lose more motivation if the attacker's CP is similar), but I doubt it. Hoarding mons for lucky egg hauls also isn't a big concern for me since I'm currently Lv 36 and there are no particular benefits for reaching the higher levels apart from marginally higher CP mons to attack with, high CP defenders aren't as crucial since they'll lose motivation anyway so only their first battle will be tough.

Potions are now something you don't need to stock up on. Took down all gyms without even fully healing my attackers since a simple Revive was enough for the most part. The first round is the toughest, but once their CP drops, it all becomes much easier.

I found that with a team half the CP of the defender there was no change in motivation lost after a battle.

Gyms potentially hold raids which, you need passes to play, and which you can buy in the shop, which right now seems like they give the best items around. Rare candies, TMs, among potentially legendary or really powerful Pokémon.

So best defenders now are basically just raw defense stats? Damage is negligible with how the CP gets lower and with how you can buy potions and revives if you really wanted to. Only resource to use/stall/waste is attackers time.

Every gym will likely be: Blissey/Chansey/Snorlax/Steelix/Umbreon/Lapras

The ones I listed are based off pure tankyness (calculated with the defense formula used for gyms) with glaring/common 2x weaknesses excluded. Tyranitar, Dragonite, Gyarados, etc. are all incredibly easy kills, and not even good defenders any more.

Steelix still does rank that high even with his HP. The weaknesses is up in the air, not as bad as the more common old mons like dnite, rhydon.

So your 800 CP Chansey and 3000 CP Blissey will take up the same number of fights if nobody else is helping and/or feeding it berries. Same for a 10 CP Magikarp or Pidgey.

Essentially what CP is is a number to show the overall power of a pokemons stats. But we dont care about Attack at all when defending, which is HEAVILY factored into CP formula.

All you want is to waste time and deter people from wanting to bother with your mons.

There are exceptions; Blissey, Chansey, and Snorlax are worth a lot more than most other mons due to their absurd tankiness. If you can put any of those in, particularly the Blissey/Chansey, you should unless they are literally garbage (very low amount of CP toward their max)

I thought I should let you guys know that while I was messing around with Motivation decreasing, etc. I also ended up leveling up my gym badge for the gym near my house.

When my defender got sent back to me, after 1 hour, I got two (or three) coins. I am 100% positive that I got more than one coin, which means that the coins you get per hour of defending a gym starts at one per hour and SCALES UP with your gym badge.

I don't know how far the gym badge scales up, but if it gets to level 10 for example, then thats 10 coins an hour.

I haven't seen this posted on here or TSR, so feel free to eat your hearts out and also contribute with findings.

This also makes sense because it makes the "hometown" advantage interesting, and makes you feel like you're fighting for YOUR SPECIFIC gyms because YOU have an upgraded gym badge and makes those gyms near you more valuable.

This adds to the incentive to turnover gyms, and also makes it more likely for people to be social and form alliances with other Trainers

It needs to be noted that CP DOES matter because higher LEVEL (not necessarily CP) Pokemon have higher defense/health than lower level Pokemon. So, a Blissey and Chansey at 2000 and 600 respectively can fight the same amount of fights, but obviously the Blissey is better because it would waste much more time due to more health/defense as a base but also due to higher level.

Well I kind of like the idea that it makes gyms less stagnant as you actually need to feed berries to your mons to keep them in, so you can no longer drive out to the middle of nowhere and take over a gym and assume it'll stick for a few weeks.

The fact that there's now more pokestops also benefits more rural areas because they already have problems getting enough items.

Downside is that it takes pretty long to take out a fully staffed gym. Whether that Blissey is at the front or at the back, you're still gonna have to fight it four or five times. But at least it gets significantly easier every time.
